I needed pure essential oils for labor but didn't want to break the bank, and this kit offered many of the oils used in the remedies I will be using. However, the negative reviews left me skeptical, so I ordered with caution (because the price is so right) and went to whole foods to sniff out some oils that I could compare.
To my delight, my set arrived the same day I went to whole foods (aromas fresh in my mind and nostrils). Now, many of the bad reviews said the oils smelled bad- there are 14 different oils in this set, and I will be the first to say I don't enjoy every scent, but that's not the brands fault- blame the plant species.
These oils are 100% authentic- they smell exactly like the other, more expensive brands.
A very important note: when shopping for quality oils, look to the company for telltale signs. Is the scientific species listed? Does the company know the origin of their oils? Do they take measures for quality control (like testing)? Are they earth-conscious? Do they rely on pushy recruits to sell you their products? Edens Garden sends a booklet with extensive information on their company and their product that thoroughly impressed me (I also LOVE the fact that I get a little "recipe" pamphlet and a detailed booklet on all the essential oils available and their uses!)
But whether you love or hate the smell of Clary Sage isn't the issue; the main purpose of these oils is their medicinal use, which I tested out on my coughing 4 year old right away- a couple of drops of eucalyptus and a couple drops of lemon in almond oil rubbed on his back, chest, and throat, and 2 hours later he's sleeping like a baby. Yep, these are pure.
Keep in mind these are by no means fragrance oils. If you're looking for perfume fragrances, you won't be getting that here. Be prepared for aromas of unadulterated, concentrated plant materials.
As for the bad reviewers, if you happened to receive an open/rancid item, it sounds like the customer service department would be more than happy to help you with that. If you don't like how the rosemary smells, join the club - not every scent is fruity and floral.
Update as of July 12,2015: Still in love with this set!! I am officially out of the sweet orange, that has by far been my favorite. I use it in my homemade laundry detergent, in my lotions, salves and deodorant. I will have to buy the 30 ml bottle as that is the one I use in the most products. I have plenty of the other oils as just a few drops will do but I use the sweet orange more frequently. I love the quality of the oils and being a beginner I love the book that comes with the set to help me see what I can use each oil for. I've had this set since November and have used it in various batches of homemade products. The price is well worth it as an initial upfront cost because a little goes a long way so in the long run I've saved tons of money by making diaper rash cream, diaper ointment, lotions, deodorant, cleaning supplies and once my other ingredients get here I'll even add a few drops to my homemade makeup. Can't say enough good things about these oils. Even used some on my stepdad when he came down with a pretty nasty cold this past winter. Just put a few drops of eucalyptus oil, peppermint and spearmint in a washcloth that was soaked in hot water that I rang out, just had him breath it in a couple of times over a half hour period and his nose that he could barely breathe out of was no longer stopped up, he could smell and taste his food and by the next morning the head cold was clearing even though he still felt a little under the weather otherwise. Anyway just funny because he's not really into essential oils but is open minded and was willing to try and got a pleasant surprise that I use them because they actually work ;)
