The Beginner's Guide to C++ eliminates the complexity of C++ by introducing classes in manageable bits. Yaroshenko is a master of the learning-by-examples-school of teaching: He marks "Try it out!" on every other page and features a simple problem to illustrate a recently introduced concept.

This huge volume is one of the more unorthodox works in the C++ genre. Yaroshenko sometimes identifies concepts in an odd but interesting way; for example, the chapter on arrays and iteration is titled "Working with Large Amounts of Data" and the chapter on input/output functions is titled "Using Disks." The book is also peppered with three-dimensional black-and-white graphs, which start to look psychedelic after all-night programming sessions. However, The Beginner's Guide to C++ provides more detail than many other C++ introductions and includes dozens of examples that illustrate how to create classes.

What a great book!

This book is an excellent book for people who wish to learn C++. I have programmed for a large portion of my life using other languages such as FORTRAN, Basic, etc.. But I was getting outdated and needed to come up to speed quick. This book is concise, easy to understand and teaches the language with easy and clear examples to try. I would recommend this for someone who has programmed before and want to learn C++.

Good book with a few weak points

I wouldn't recommend this book to an absolute beginner to programming. It requires a little knowledge of programming to be useful.

Also, while the book does a good job teaching C++ it doesn't do enough to teach the fundamentals of object oriented design, and alot of the programs require compilers/operating systems that many people don't have.

Finally, the book doesn't offer any exersices to the reader. Something I find very helpful in the learning of any programming language.

This is by far the WORST book I've read on programming. By the second chapter the book deviates from the ANSI C++ standard, using commands left over from C that can cause conflicts in more advanved programs, utilizes blatently sloppy programming technique (again okay for now- but will cause big problems later), and introduces very advanced concepts before the most basic of programming skills is mastered. My biggest problem with this text is that, to work properly, almost all of the example programs require header files that are not available in any standard distribution (g++, for example). What good is an example if you can't get it to work? I don't know who the above reviews came from- as an Engineering major at Duke University, I can now look back and wonder how I ever got anywhere trying to learn from this horrible book. My recommendation would be to go to your local college text book store and ask for whatever it is they use for introductory C++ programming. Good luck!

An incredibly disappointing "beginner's" guide

I was looking for a good text that would help me with my transition from C to C++. I bought this book after reading raving reviews of it here on amazon.com. After spending several weeks with the book I must admit that I am very dissapointed. In my opinion, the text lacks logical organization of key concepts. Moreover, the author spreads explanations of related concepts all over the book, making it hard to find the needed information. A good example of this is the introduction of loops. Yaroshenko stretches this concept across 4 chapters making it a pain for a beginner to keep focused. As a closing remark I would like to warn beginners about this book. It offers no clear explanation of key C++ features and lacks any exercises. After struggling with this book for a few weeks you will be frustrated and never want to tackle programming again.

A True Beginer's Book!

If you are a total beginner, you might want to learn C first. (Look for Greg Perry's "Absolute Beginner's Guide to C") Although this book has "Beginner" as the title, that's not what it actually means...
If you're a C programmer like me and wants to know what's all the hype about C++, then better get this book. This book smoothens the transition from C to C++.
By the end of every chapter, there is always a working program built from scratch using all the knowledge you've gained from previous chapter(s).
And guess what? By the end of the book, you'll know how to use Borland Graphic Interface (BGI) and create a simple (but marvellous) DOS game "Typing-Tutor": it's like a simplified DOS version of "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe"
Although this book is quite dated, you can always catch up with ANSI standard by reading more advanced books. I finished this and I'm going to skim through Ivon Horton's "Beginning C++ (ANSI/ISO Compliant)" and then to Andrew Koenig & Barbara Moo's "Accelerated C++".
Why? Well, Ivor Horton's book has many exercises and well-explained solutions. While Moo's Accel. C++ has plenty unsolved exercised for you to do. So when you get to Moo's book, you'll know how to solve these exercises already.

THE book to learn C++.

The Good- This book is the best C++ book around. If you're looking to learn the fundamentals of c++ programming. You must get this book. It was the first programming book I ever bought, and its also the best book on the subject I've ever boughtt.
I don't know how Oleg does it. He takes a concept that is very hard to understand and translates it into pure simple understandable english. He also makes c++ FUN to learn. Most books on the subject matter at hand are sooooo stuffy, boring, and dry. Oleg's writing style is fresh and lively. He makes everything interesting.
This book definately takes a hands on approach. Sometimes you don't understand 100% what you are doing. That's ok however because he always answers the questions that you have, eventually. Sometimes it may take a few pages or even chapters to explain the answer in depth, but he will always address new information and make sure you have at least a basic understanding of it before moving on.
The Bad-
This book is getting to quite dated and so some information is a bit dated.
There are errors in the coding. On a few occasions there are listings that won't compile. A ";" has been forgotten or some other minor detail that could possibly frustrate a beginner. They are usually fairly easy to spot however and aren't that numerous.
His style is a bit spuradic(sp?). It's not that his style is bad, its just that he has inconsistancies that make his code hard to understand at times. I think that these are mainly to show the reader different ways people attack problems.
He doesn't use ANSCI standard. This to a beginner (like myself)doesn't really matter but the reader needs to be aware of this fact.
Overall this book will teach you the fundamentals and basics of c++ programming. It does have it's faults but they are minor and don't effect the learning process.

I had originally bought titles such as "Teach Yourself C++ in 21days" but found them quite hard going. After reading the reviews for this text I purchased same. I've been very impressed with the presentation of the book, learning examples and overall structure. Whilst there may be some minor errors (as other reviewers have highlighted) these are generally quite obvious when you have been following the text. My advice to fellow C++ novices - buy this book and a couple of intermediate and advanced books and you'll have a decent programming resource.
