This is the right way to teach programming

This book is priceless! As a person who has an OK grasp of JavaScript, but have been struggling to get through any YouTube video tutorials on Express and MongoDB, this book got me there and made it fun. The code is clear and explanations are concise. There's no cutest stuff just clear explanations on what is being done and why. I keep this book held open with a clip next to my desk and it makes comparing what I have to what is being typed a breeze!

Another thing I should mention is that the book follows along a bootstrap blog template and you turn that template into a working blog. At first I thought that it's strange to work with remade html, css, Js etc. But then I realized how useful this skill is to work with someone else's code and implement functionality around it. Genius! There's also some refactoring which I've gotten very practice in so far so I think it's a great excercise for newbs like me!

So this isn't the book if you know zero javascript, css or html. But if you feel comfortable in all of those but have never worked on server side js or in node js, this is a good way to start!

It's been a while since I've had to dive into node so I went looking for something that was:

1) Affordable
2) Covered the key topics
3) Had decent reviews

I chose this book in my total non-exhaustive search and I'm glad I did. I was remembering concepts I'd forgotten and being brought up to speed on new ones throughout each chapter. I had the Kindle version and it was well formatted - the code was easy to read and follow.

If you want a truly deep dive into MERN, however, this is likely not the book for you. If you are new or want to get up to speed again like me - this book is excellent.

At the end of the day I liked the author's approach enough I ended up getting his book on React and so far it's more of the exact same thing I was looking for.

Probably a good place to start. The book runs through some practical applications to teach node.js, which works well to a point. It lacks in presentation of fundamentals in sequential fashion and lacks little things like an Index. Not a textbook or reference book but will get working with enough competency to have some more intelligent questions to ask. I think that is what the author's intension was, so I believe he succeeded.

Covers everything you need to know is a simple basic way that lets you focus on spending your time to learn and spend your own time researching how to make it all work on your own creations. Highly recommend. Don’t pay attention to the distractors, every programming book is out of date six months after it is released, but with some googling and a bit of work everything is doable.

You get the following error in chapter 5: "model.create() no longer accepts a callback". Basic google research I found this is a change in behavior for MongoDB as of v6, several years ago. The book states the author updates the book/code to account for software updates. No such new code repository exists. I tried URLs from 2 of his books, both pages cannot be found. So unless you already know what you are doing (in which case you wouldn't need this book to begin with), this book will do you no good. I emailed the author, got no reply.

This book does what it says. Good for a beginner. The Clean Blog template from Bootstrap has been updated a bit since the writing of this book, a basic understanding of HTML will help. I can vouch for the code examples, it all works. I would of liked to seen router examples, but I’ve got a far better understanding of Express. Easy and fun, I finished it twice. I recommend it. Working source code at DelMouse/Clean-Bog on git hub if you encounter issues.

Great content with well worked example code to help get you up and running with Node.js, Express and Mongodb in the context of Node.js. The book doesn't appear to have been edited and has many minor English language errors making it difficult to read, particularly for someone with attention deficit as a language error makes me have to re-read several times. Some better formatting would also help as it isn't always clear what should be typed or removed from code. I've found that 'localhost', used in most examples, has stopped working and I think that may be because of a recent version of Node.js so look out for that issue and consider altering your mongod.cfg file to accept 127.0.0.1 instead. All that said, still a good book which will help a programmer get up and running quickly so I do recommend it,

I bought the Kindle version, which told me that it will take approximately 3 to 4 hours from the preface to the end. However, as it would turn out, that was quite an understatement. I would consider myself as a beginner with some understanding of VBA and SQL, but near to no knowledge in CSS and Javascript. In combination with the fast evolving tools that are covered in the book, I ended up in studying error messages and their solutions. Although most of them were caused by my own typos, some were a result of changed versions. One example is the bootstrap template, which now comes with a form, that would cost a monthly fee. As there is no feedback form needed, adopting the form respectively was quite easy, but needed some reading about bootstrap. Other examples are deprecated Node.js or Express methods or functions, but those can easily be overcome by reading the error message and applying an additional property within the function. (E.g. mongoose.connect() and app.use(express.urelencoded), both in index.js). The positive from this is that one does not only learn something about Node.js, MongoDB and express, but also about git, Bootstrap and Heroku.
All together, for me it was probably the fastest way to learn the basics of Node.js and if you want to get a quick introduction in MongoDB, Express and Node.js, I highly recommend to have a look at this or other books from Greg Lim.

The book contains a lot of errors, there are inconsistencies between the pages, e.g. once the author refers to the home.js file and once to homePage.js. There are a lot of bugs in the code - you have to guess a lot and fix it manually. In some places the github code is different than the one in the book. If not for the fact that I am an experienced developer from other areas, it would probably not be possible to follow the examples from the book, it would be good to do a quality check before publishing...

As described, the book is simple, easy and you can finish it in a couple of days.
As indicated, it does not cover everything, but the essentials.

After you finish, you'll know that you learned nothing, you don't know how Express is structured, what is a callback function (the very weird function for developers coming new to NodeJS)..., but the book leads you on how to do your first MEN application. That's it.
At some point, you feel: "Oh Damn! It's like a DIY homework, not a book".

Also, the book have a lot of mistakes and needs peer revision. For instance, the hash cost is 2^100 rounds instead of 100 times. That's a lot of difference in performance.
