This was a painfully bad, clearly self-pubbed book. I truly do feel rather badly that I'm writing this review, but I always appreciate when reviewers save me from reading terrible books, so I wanted to return the favor. The story itself is amateurish, the characters are wholly unlikeable - especially Jess -- the pacing is bad, and gah, the melodrama! Seriously, it is like reading a story about young teens who Overdramatize! Everything! "Woe is me! Why does he hate me? Is it just because I act like I hate him? Or perhaps he loves me, but I don't want him to be nice to me because it's clearly just lust!" *Pout* *scattered curse words* *punches wall*

There's the story, in a nutshell. Doesn't make sense? Illogical thoughts and actions? Welcome to the world of "New Beginnings."
- We have a character who is just repellent, nasty and negative in all her interactions with people, but somehow she is quickly liked by virtually all.
- There's a minor character who, in his first interaction with Mary Sue, er, "Jess," tells her a huge secret that no one else in the town knows.
- Jess then tells a relatively new acquaintance something she and the Alpha had agreed to keep secret ... five minutes after they agreed to do so.
- The characters will laugh and say something is funny because we are clearly supposed to believe it is, but evidently the only way we would know is to have it spelled out for us. (Nothing that is deemed "funny" or "hilarious" by the characters is, in fact, humorous at all, btw.)

Just for kicks, an actual excerpt I highlighted as illustrative of the quality of writing.
"She would never let him force her hand, and he knew it, but he wouldn't. That didn't stop him from wanting her to want him on her own.

Okay, I don't understand the other reviews of this book. This is the first book of hers I've read, so maybe the others are better? I could not get past Jess. Could not stand her, don't get why Slater fell for her as she treated him like dirt. She was not badass, she was rude and unpleasant to everyone. Way to start over with a new pack!? Don't understand her weird relationship with her "best friend" Fallon. Don't understand how Gregory got to be an "alpha" when he was a big old whine bag? In short this whole story did not make sense to me.

A wonderful and different take with shifters and I loved seeing "others". Besides shifters we have druids, witches, shamans, earth fae, and a whole lot more.
Jess is a short, sexy and sassy wolf shifter who needed a change in a very bad way. She did what she promised herself she would never do when she got royally drunk.
Slater is a hot yummy alpha from Edenton and agrees to let Jess into his pack. Once she arrives the sparks fly and it is game on. Both of them feel the attraction but fight it because of past issues. His because he does not date the female wolves from his pack and hers well she won't because he is the alpha and she was not going to repeat a past mistake with Slater.
Action, suspense, drama, hot spicy love scenes, laughter. The secondary characters fleshed out the rest of the story wonderfully. Looking forward to Brody and Fallon's story next.

This was the story of Jess and Slater finding the love they both didn't know they needed or wanted. Jess being a very independent woman and werewolf needed a change in her life and a new pack. She didn't want to get involved with any wolf or human. She just wanted to run her own bar and be happy. She also was gifted with the ability to see the future which made it difficult to form friendships. Slater kept himself from getting involved with anyone in the pack or humans for fear of mating. He was still not over the loss of his first mate. But Jess just kept drawing him to her. Problems with another pack member and issues with their own relationship made for a very good story. The author did a great job with the secondary characters too. Well written and highly recommend.

this was a free book I had been looking at for a few weeks & recently my book pics are off. too many first person for some reason which i don't like but i try to look at reviews & still was not happy with recent selections. i guess reviews are subjective. that said I ordered 6 freebies...this one among them. started the other five then didn't finish any. so i was going into this one thinking all ready i might not like it.
Surprisingly......i did! alot!!! it got my interest early on & not because it's a genre i haven't read. alpha wolves usually turn me off with the whole weird doggie sex & muttered "mine" thoughts. The premise can be overdone for sure likening the alphas to dogs sniffing out their bitches in heat. if i want that, i can watch my neighbors unspayed dog attract all the male dogs in the area. no thanks.
this book was different. the pack leader is an independent free thinker...preferring to treat females with respect & seems to encourage their use of free will....so no forced sex scenes here. simple but not often used idea. and it works. beautifully. he is a kind soul who'd been saddened by the loss of his first mate & had a strict hands off policy with females in his pack. no force here. no pushing heirarchy. and as the alpha goes...so go the other males in the pack which leads to all kinds of options for other books. even though this is listed as a prequel, i read it first & am now reading "in too deep". the story line flows that way. And i am loving that as well. there are many strong males in these books so future book have endless possibilities. yay!
I really like this author's writing style. the main points in the book are not overdrawn nor do they ramble.
