The story flips between the past and the present. The past describes how the couple met and how their relationship evolved. The present deals with how Grace is trying to cope with the structure of their marriage and preparing for Millie to move in.
I don't want to give too much away but the abuse is horrific. It's not really physical but the mental and behavior treatment made me sick to my stomach. I have enjoyed books with violence but this, without any real gore, was beyond my ability to cope. I could not believe the evilness of it and I couldn't shake it. It is awful that it is rattling in my head. I wish there was a new [book:The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency|7061] but there's not. I will settle for a Hamish Macbeth.
I gave it two stars because it is well written and does keep you on the edge of your seat. There was a lot of improbabilities in it but it kept you reading. For me it was awful. If I was not reading it to review I would not have finished it. I would not recommend it to anyone.
Many of you either had difficulty making it through to the end or did not finish reading - due to the forms of abuse depicted.
I am giving this book 5 stars because the author was able to evoke horror from her readers - and being a survivor of domestic violence, I can verify that as I read along, I began feeling all the same feelings I experienced in my situation. While the circumstances were different, B.A. Paris' was able to exhibit - what it feels like to be trapped by a predator. All the horror, fear, depression, isolation...etc actually happens in real life. It is not as far fetched of a tale as you might imagine.
The writing was great and I was riveted almost from the get go. I have been many years removed from my situation - so I could read through this novel without activating any PTSD symptoms. I do not recommend for the faint of heart. Predators do seek out vulnerable people, sociopaths abuse animals, and often times - the greatest and most damaging abuse is not physical. I believe the author was able to convey this perfectly.
Overall, brilliant writing.
