The story of Laila and Asher is beautiful and heartbreaking, yet completely honest and raw. As mentioned in the description, there is a huge culture clash between Asher and Laila's backgrounds on both sides. Laila is from a strict Moroccan Muslim family and Asher's family has a wealthy dynasty with expectations on his future. The conflict continues throughout the book as we watch love try to conquer all from Beth's hand.
I have loved all of Beth's books that I have read and there have been several now. Her writing makes sure you know each character very well and when you begin to question this or that, be assured it will be answered fully. Her scenery descriptions stand out to me and always stick with me when I remember back on her books. I could feel the sand dunes & "secret lake" of a combustible young couple in their own little new world of 'falling in love'. And the siren songs of a grown Laila written by her own hand and sung behind her veiled curtain are deeply felt by not only Asher but also the reader. The conflict of their not being together just makes you root with your whole heart that they can be 'free to love' one another.
Going back in time eight years to the summer in Crescent Bay was a wonderful way to give the full romantic story of Asher and Laila. The impact of their beginning affected them so greatly that the chance meeting years later (in the beginning of the book) grabbed them (and me) greatly. Asher was intense and possessive ...and how wonderful to know him so thoroughly at 21 and also approaching 30. Asher was tender and fierce. Laila was rooted and learned to 'own her gift' as a song artist. She had been encouraged by young Asher and thoroughly appreciated by older Asher. I really do like wondering what would happen next for them after this book (which will leave you satisfied) and I am very happy to have more of Beth Kery's other books to read!
