The story itself is set in 1930s Japan and Thailand, where two Thai aristocrats wrestle with their love for each other, and their duty to their family. The two protagonists are both involved in arranged relationships which they entered into out of duty to family and social class. Duty to family wins out in the end, a conclusion which some of my Thai friends assure me is indeed satisfying, though my American friends find tragic.
Behind the Painting is engaging for its story line which is well developed and entertains and intrigues. It is worth reading for this reason alone. But for the more anthropologically inclined, Behind the Painting is also interesting for what it says about Thai culture and values. The book from this context, helped me to understand better how my Thai friends understand themselves and their families.
Beautiful sets, songs, singing, acting, dancing.
Overall an amazing show.
