Second UPDATE: 3/2013 It has been 10 months since my purchase of this tub and am disappointed that the price is almost double what I paid for it since I considered buying another one but not at that price. The only issue I'm having is a green growth (maybe algae) that seems to appear only during the hotter months. It is actually a plus that the color of the tub makes it easily visable before it gets out of hand unlike black tubs I've had in the past. What I don't like is that it seems to settle in the nooks and crannies and almost makes it necessary for me to use a toothbrush to get to it all. Other than that minor inconvenience it's still going strong.
I was looking for a less expensive larger than my current 70 gallon black Rubbermaid stock tank that is now selling for $150 at our local feed store. This is one of those instances where I took a chance and bought without the benefit of a customer review and feel I got what I paid for. That is not however a bad thing it is what it is. This review is going to be brutally forthright as I myself appreciate honesty.
I shouldn't complain too much since it was free shipping but due to the sub standard packaging it arrived scuffed and scratched. The outside of the tub was wrapped in lightweight (cooking grade) plastic wrap a couple of times then taped with clear also lightweight packing tape. It was stuck to the exposed portions of the tub which took a bit of effort to remove. The outside bottom of the tank was protected by a lone piece of lightweight cardboard held on with plastic wrap. The inside of the tub was totally exposed open to the elements hence it arrived soiled with dust and caked on dirt. Not that big of a problem but tacky to arrive dirty IMHO.
Can't really complain for the price but I expected a thicker grade of plastic it is probably half the density of the standard Rubbermaid tubs I've owned in the past. The side walls are 4ft. long and there is enough play that it can pushed slightly inwards by a human imagine what a horse can do with that. SO FAR SO GOOD HORSES ARE IGNORING IT OTHER THAN DRINKING FROM IT.
It is a nice smooth composite material that is an appealing tan/grey with dark flecks throughout. I especially chose this tank for the UV protection but have no way of testing it so I'll update the review if I find it does not hold up. My only hope is that it can keep the water cooler in the AZ heat than the black tubs do since I have plenty of those that are useless to me. AMAZINGLY ENOUGH IT DOES KEEP THE WATER AT A DECENT TEMPERATURE FOR THE 100 PLUS DEGREE DAYS WE GET, I'M IMPRESSED
The molded rim that runs around the entire circumference is fashioned in such a way that it folds in on itself on the inside leaving a minute gap . Should you tip the tank to empty instead of using the drain plug debris will find its way trapped within the rounded lip become trapped and leak contaminating refilled clean water. Unless you never tip it to empty that won't be an issue for you but it is a very big no-no for me. This would have been a deal breaker had I known but isn't visible in the Amazon photos. MY HUSBAND MADE A RECOMMENDATION TO DRILL A HOLE UNDERNEATH THE LIP SO WHEN I DUMP IT THE WATER STUCK IN THE LIP EXITS - HIS IDEA WORKS GREAT!!!
The drain plug is made of black heavier duty plastic of course I can't see the molded in aluminum it calls out in the description. IT DOES HAVE ALUMINUM I SPOTTED IT WHEN I EMPTIED IT AND IT IS A GOOD THING SINCE IT MAKES IT EASIER TO CORK. I do like the positioning of the drain it is on one of the 2 ft ends and located close to the ground allowing maximum drainage . I tried to remove the plug and couldn't by hand, It appears that there should be some sort of tool to easily unscrewing it but I found none within. I believe that using a metal tool will gouge the plastic so I will have to be careful and use a lot of force. I FOUND A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE PLIERS THAT I KEEP HANDY AND TRY TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO GOUGE THE PLUG BUT IT DID MARE IT, I'M SURE I'LL HAVE TO REPLACE THE PLUG EVENTUALLY BUT THAT'S NO BIGGIE
Make sure you measure the area in which you want to place it because it seems much bigger than I anticipated from the picture. IT IS BIGGER THAN I WANTED SO I ONLY FILL IT HALFWAY I WISH IT CAME SMALLER MAYBE 70 GALLONS BUT IT'LL DO.
All in all I'll give it a whirl and hope it proves to give me as good a service as my good ole rubbermaid has 16 years and counting. Hope this helped you make a decision.
I'M GLAD I BOUGHT IT NOW SO FAR SO GOOD.
UPDATE: This tank has held up very well. In the weather full time and still holding up with no issues. Would definitely recommend for livestock or as a small swim tank (as I'm using it).
