Review

California was once regarded as a model for the nation; trends that started here swept the continent. Today we can only hope this is not true; but as The Beholden State powerfully shows, if California is still a model, the nation is in deep trouble. The stunning swiftness by which California went from being Reagan's "shining city on a hill" to Detroit-by-the-Sea is an object lesson for the rest of the nation on how quickly bad public policy can squander the bounty of nature and the productivity of its creative citizens.
(Steven F. Hayward, William Simon Distinguished Visiting Professor, Pepperdine University Graduate School of Public Policy, Senior Fellow, Pacific Research Institute)

The editors and writers of New York's sprightly City Journal have gone west, young man, and have returned with a gold nugget of political wisdom. How California became a basket case, and why it needn't remain one—these are the twin veins worked in this sobering and inspiring volume. No one concerned with the future of California and the nation can afford to ignore The Beholden State. (Charles Kesler, Claremont McKenna College)

California "The Beholden State"....Facts and stories about its demographic war of outpopulation. It's not the Hatfields vs the McCoys it's the Havenots vs the Haves and the Havenots are running the State and dragging it into the Third World! California isn't really part of the USA any more it makes its own rules and ignores laws it doesn't like!
Hang an American Flag out of your window in the wrong neighborhood and you will be called everything from Nativist to Right Wing Racist. A recent USC study showed that 1 out of 3 people in Los Angeles(pop.4million) are in the country illegally while a L.A.Times recent story showed L.A. as the hit and run capitol of the USA!
This book illustrates what long term residents of the State have been dealing with since 1986 and it has only gotten worse.

Read it if you want to see why this has happened to a California that once ranked at the top is now at the bottom!

Brian Anderson's brilliant editing is like reading a diagnosis of a terminally ill patient. The effect is to distill and confirm what we thought we generally knew about California's dysfunctional policies: education, financial, energy, the looming public employee compensation disaster, and pervasive regulations and taxation that are driving businesses to Texas and Florida. Further proof that governance of this once great state is broken are essays by well-qualified writers about the public assistance and homeless problem, illegal immigration, unions exercising power way beyond their numbers, bilingual education, and other systemic afflictions. Interestingly, the authors not only diagnose the ailments, they suggest cogent solutions. This is a lodestar of information for those interested in turning this start around.

Very thoughtful work. Captures the situation facing the state now and into the future unless steps are taken to divert the almost certain disaster. Will not appeal to those who shrug and say nothing.

You'll find this book uplifting -- if you live outside California. If you reside in the badly misnamed "Golden State" -- not so much. As I like to say, "California is the engine of prosperity -- for the other 49 states."

If you'd like to see a plethora of dreary, updated stats -- comparing CA with the other 49 states -- go to my fact sheet link:
