Review

"Not only is Ruth Chou Simons a gifted artist, she’s a gifted author. In her newest book, Beholding and Becoming, she faithfully combines biblical wisdom with beautiful reminders from nature. It’s evident on every page that her creations reflect her love for our Creator. This book will encourage your soul, remind you of truth, and help you delight in the majestic world all around you."
Melissa Kruger, author and director of women’s content for The Gospel Coalition

"Filled with beauty and truth, Ruth Simons' Beholding and Becoming helps us reorient our thinking and our gaze to behold the Creator of the universe. 'We become what we behold,' and this book provides tools to help us fix our eyes on the One we will worship for eternity."
Trillia Newbell, author of Sacred Endurance,If God Is for Us, and the kids' book God's Very Good Idea

"Through her brush and pen, Ruth calls us to open our eyes to the abundance of beauty and truth that completely surrounds us but for some of us (raises hand) is hard to see. This book points to the mystery, artistry, and attention to detail that God has woven into the midst of the mundane, repetitive, and ordinary. A stunning masterpiece—you'll hang on every word and obsess over every painting."
Myquillyn Smith, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Cozy Minimalist Home

"Becoming what we behold offers the hope of becoming as we’ve always hoped, because it holds up Christ. In a world battling for our eyes and attention, this is a deeply important book for our times. These pages are more than a feast for the eyes—they are direly needed manna for souls who want what fulfills. Let your tired, hungry soul gaze on Whom your soul wants most. And your soul will become more like you always wanted: more like Jesus. This is a beautiful orthodoxy, this is transformationally cruciform, this is a masterpiece forming us more like our Master. Behold. Become. Be held."
Ann Voskamp, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Broken Way and One Thousand Gifts

"Ruth’s beautiful art is just a vessel for this deeply meaningful book that will cause you to love God more and see Him in your everyday life."
Jennie Allen, author of Nothing to Prove, founder and visionary of IF:Gathering

"In a world that continually calls us to worship self, Ruth Simons invites us to consider what our hearts admire. Through her captivating paintings and wise words, Ruth beckons us to an infinitely better source of worship: our creator, God. We all need to be reminded that true contentment and growth aren’t found in worldly achievements but in beholding God in all His glory. We’re thankful for the hope and encouragement in this book."
Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler, cofounders of Risen Motherhood and coauthors of Risen Motherhood

"In a broken world where chaos, clutter, confusion, and contention surround us and threaten to undo us, Ruth Chou Simons invites us to lift our eyes upward and behold God’s beauty and grace. Ruth's rich artistry—both visual and written—points us to a redeeming God who is making all things new. Seeing Him in even the most ordinary moments and details of life, we are moved to worship and are transformed into His likeness. One day the restoration will be complete, and our hearts will be forever ravished by His beauty."
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author, Bible teacher/host of Revive Our Hearts

"Ruth is such a gift to us—her voice is strong and honest, yet believably grace-filled and kind. We learn and grow into who we want to be when Ruth's words and art lead us."
Annie F. Downs, bestselling author of 100 Days to Brave and host of That Sounds Fun podcast

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and real life on every praising page.
By Terri Conlin on September 10, 2019
Beholding and Becoming is filled with some of my favorite things: bees, blackberries, thistles and peonies, and love for our God who made them all in delightful detail. Ruth paints the page with words and watercolors illustrating in living color how touchable worship can be in everyday life. There are simple prompts on full color pages in each chapter for ways to behold your people and this wild world - and not only in its beauty, but in its tears as well.

When you read this book, you’ll remember our world is a cathedral. As soon as I reached the last praising page, I began again, this time more slowly in awe of my ordinary and wonderful life, and wonder about yours, too.

Beholding and Becoming is an invitation to slow down, notice small things, and smile in alleluias. We walk every step of this bittersweet life with a beautiful, star-flinging, tear-catching God. Ruth’s book will remind you just how near is the One who loves us fiercely, tenderly, truly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, Christ-centered Creation
By CMorlet on September 10, 2019
Ruth is on a Roll!
Yet Another Gorgeous, Christ-centered Creation

A longtime @gracelaced fan, I'm very familiar with Ruth's work. Beholding and Becoming is the next dream-come-to-life in an excellent history of products by Ruth Chou Simons. But it isn't just another product...this is a very intentional book. As with other Ruth creations, the reader is pointed directly to Christ time and time again, reminded in a way a best friend reminds, to take our eyes off of ourselves, put them on the LORD, and thus, live accordingly. In Beholding and Becoming, we are reminded that God is in the every day. He is consistently there for us, just as the sun rises each day. He is a master Creator of flowers and sunsets and nature. We view Ruth's masterful watercolors throughout the book, and remember to see His hand in it all. As a result, we praise him, standing in awe, and steward what we have been given with faithfulness.

Not only did I love what Ruth had to say, feeling the whole time like I was hanging out with her over a cup of coffee as she spoke truth into my life, but I also enjoyed her signature artwork. Some of the watercolors in this book were actually action items, presented in a fun, pretty way. I loved these and also the questions posed throughout that helped me think about application right away.

Bottom line: buy this right away. For yourself, your friends, your sisters, everyone. I'm of the opinion that everyone needs to hear what is shared in Beholding and Becoming. If you desire to be encouraged and to draw nearer to your Creator (while also looking at pretty art), buy this! Could not recommend this book more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Encouraging in every season!
By Kayla Oliver on September 11, 2019
I have been waiting with eager anticipation for the release of Beholding and Becoming. I have followed Ruth Chou Simons online for several years, beginning as a new “unlikely boy mom” myself, and I always come away from reading her words more encouraged and grounded in my identity in Christ and more aware of how to live out my role as a wife and mother from a gospel-filled heart.

This most recent book is beautiful. The chapters are short enough to be read quickly, but packed full of truth that you can continue chewing on and digesting throughout the day. I love that the chapter titles (especially the “Becoming” sections) can also serve as helpful mantras or reminders, and I find myself repeating them to myself throughout the day - especially “Learn to Love What Must Be Done.” These little subtitles encapsulate the principles Ruth lays out in the book in a concise, easy to remember way and help me to apply the principles in my day-to-day life - and that’s the goal isn’t it? Gospel transformation - not just more knowledge and pretty pictures to go with it. I know that is Ruth’s goal and I’m a grateful recipient of her God-honoring wisdom.

Also, I’m just always in awe of Ruth’s skill with a paintbrush and intentionality to choose images that are meaningful in and of themselves. There’s a glossary at the beginning of this book that shares a bit about the meaning of the different images and motifs throughout the book - so lovely and helpful! AND between each chapter are beautiful paintings with hand-lettered ideas for how to implement the principles from the previous chapter.

If you’re looking for a brief devotional read with true depth and beauty, this is it. I’m looking forward to giving these as gifts to many friends and family members - Christmas is on the horizon!

The author’s first book (Gracelaced) was truly important to me and helping my devotional life along. Both #BeholdingandBecoming and #Gracelaced brought me to selah moments, which for me, are moments of deep breaths, pausing and hitting refresh. Though I deeply love the first book, this book was a step up! I found the writing even more beautiful and clear. The author has a way of writing so direct yet so simple and creative. I also found the artwork in this book next level!! I was captivated from the start and blessed by so many things and quotes in this book. It is a work of art in every way possible!
