My husband called Behrens directly and asked whether we can knock down the surface with steel wool or some other abrasive. I have been nervous about taking off too much and exposing the steel. The woman at the company didn't seem to think it was likely that we would do any damage. She recommended sandpaper (fine, presumably - no one mentioned any particular grit). She was pleasant and understood the issue - I suspect they've heard it before.
We haven't yet given the sandpaper a try. It probably won't take much work with it to make the surface tolerable. I did groan, though, when we were at a local store recently and saw some much smaller Behrens tubs which had perfect finishing inside...I wish this model were the same!
it is pretty big. he is around 100 lbs, and can almost lay flat across the tub.
it seems durable, and for the price is a good deal. i've looked at tractor supply stores, and for something of this size, $45 is a helluva price.
definitely a functional product (not for display).
