Reviewed as a $40 piece of computer audio recording equipment. First of all, I am a sound engineer with about 15 years in the trade. I have experience with all sorts of equipment ranging from low end to mid grade. I am absolutely blown away at what this $40 box is able to accomplish. Recording vocals and acoustic guitar with an SM57 sounded lifelike. I will follow up with some sound samples. You will not be disappointed with this, ESPECIALLY if you are new to recording and need a simple "songwriter" type setup. On one input, plug in your microphone, and on the other, plug in your guitar, keyboard, etc. Behringer has free multitrack software for download in case you don't have any, although I cannot speak for its usefulness, but I am sure it is fine. I repurposed an old Cubase program I purchased MANY years ago, and it worked flawlessly. Of course, there is always the hassle of setting up the software, making sure the busses are correct and the inputs are all set, but if you don't know how to do that, you need to learn these recording basics because these are essential to the craft.

*Other notes: make sure you download the ASIO4ALL driver located at the Behringer website, and that driver also has an official website as well.
Upon plugging in the UMC22, the generic drivers install and appear to make your box ready to use, but this is very misleading. The generic ASIO drivers that install upon plugging in this unit for the first time do not play well with this box, and this confused me for a few minutes as I thought they were the drivers that were intended to be used. These generic drivers will also cause the popping and clicking ('weird' as one reviewer put it) noises that some users stated they heard while recording, thinking the unit was faulty. You won't be disappointed. Try this box, especially if you are on the fence between this and other similar options units.

If you're like me and aren't musically inclined, but have a voice that's described as being perfect for radio, this interface may be all you need to start. I was debating between this unit and the Focusrite Scarlett, but the price difference between the two meant that it was a no-brainer at the time. It's plug-and-play simplicity at a price point that I can agree with. That and an MXL microphone helped upgrade me from the serviceable, but not exactly amazing, Blue Snowball microphone to something that can easily help me pull in more voiceover work than I have in the past. You can see a great review of this interface on the YouTube channel Podcastage, which really helped convince me to purchase this unit. I'll reiterate many of the same points: an all metal chassis that feels and looks great; firm, well-set control knobs; a direct monitor switch for headphones and controllable gain that works great until about ~75-80%-ish means that you can amplify (or decrease) your input appropriately.

Behringer's cheaper units have a reputation for malfunctioning, however, so it will stand to say that in 5 or 6 months I will update this review.

I'm reviewing this as a $40 product. It is clearly meant for entry level users and hobbyists.

Personal uses:

- Connecting microphones and electric instruments to a computer for practice and recording
- Facilitating live amplification

Pros:

- Solid construction (metal)
- Supports professional quality 48v condenser mics
- Very clean sound
- Low lag overall; has a bypass for monitoring output when necessary
- Functionally similar to the $100 Focusrite product

Cons:

- Must be connected to a computer for power (it wouldn't run off wall USB power)
- Mild hiss when the mic gain is high

Overall:

I'm extremely happy with the UMC22. It is exactly what I was looking for. I first tried a couple cheap USB sound interfaces and they were awful. This market space is a zoo and it's not clear what many products do; many products are pure junk. This one works very well and feels like it'll last as long as I live.

It's £30 for crying out loud, why are you even reading this?
Well, if you're still reading this, consider the following:

- Set up is insanely simple (providing you're older than 2 years old and have opposable thumbs)
- No drivers or external power supply, just plug and play.
- Midas pre-amp sounds great
- It's the same price as a meal in Harvester

Think of it this way: anything with the word 'Midas' written on it a few years ago would cost upwards of three figures.
Now you can have the same technology in a box with Behringer written on it for less than the price of a train ticket from Watford to London and back. We live in wonderful times.

Not enough information regarding the setup and no information on what cables to get once you had got is and downloaded the driver the fun starts... again no information on setting it up on windows. they presume you plug it in and it works not the case it took me 5 frustrating hours to eventually get it to work using the windows control panel and sound setup why the company never bothered to explain this I dont know. Once done you are left thinking why they did not give that information. saying all that it is producing good clean sound lets hope it continues

Had trouble with setup so I'll say the solution here, the interface wasn't sending the input from inst 2 into the computer, even though i could tell it was receiving from the guitar I had plugged in using the built in monitor. My computer had set the device as being 1 channel when it actually has 2. Window 7> Right click on the speaker sound symbol >Recording devices >Select device >Advanced tab >Select 2 channel cd quality> Apply.

Also, the product worked great for me when I figured that out, using it to record a mic and guitar. Fantastic for the price.

I downloaded and installed software and drivers from behringer..but Inst 2 was not working, it turns out this is a problem well known to Behringer and the forums are full of people all complaining about same thing..luckily one helpful person on the forums found a solution using old drivers..it's working now but if I had known how difficult it was to get this thing working then I would never have bought it. Sort out your driver's Behringer!!

This is a pretty decent bit of kit for the price and recording is easy, however playback through the headphones has a bit of a problem. Any instruments/vox that are centre panned are really quiet in the mix. Panning them either side suddenly makes them much louder.
I tried using the headphone socket on my PC instead and everything was fine so I know it's not the PC/DAW/Headphones/whatever.

Maybe there's a driver update to fix this, I don't know??

If you're using monitors or some other output source then it's not really a problem I guess but if you're using this to record at home quietly then you may need to use your PC/Mac's headphone socket while mixing etc
