First, I am not sure why the author felt so much plot had to take place within weeks. People don't typically change thinking and feeling all that fast, so it made mush out of some things, had characters make statements at improbable times, etc.
Second, there are tons of sex scenes, and many feel forced, maybe even tedious. There is at least one good one, but others fall flat.
Third, get a good editor. On the positive, there are not big spelling or grammar gaffes. On the negative, when you throw something down outdoors, it doesn't land on the floor - one example of context errors. A good editor could have helped with the pacing as well.
If it were not for the skewed ratings system, I would likely give this two stars - but the way the review system skews, that feels rather harsh. It is not a terrible book, just not a particularly good one. Plus, most writers deserve a star just for being able to write a book - a skill I lack!
Sawyer a straight guy in a famous band, can’t have feelings for his new body guard Jake who also just happens to be his best friend from a long time ago. The last time they seen each other was when Jake kissed Sawyer and Sawyer freaked out and bolted.
Jake’s feeling for Sawyer have never wained so when he finds out Sawyers band is looking for a new head of security, he jumps at the chance. I love his determination and his will power to crack through Sawyer’s walls of denial.
The two are so passionate together and the temperature skyrockets when the two come together.
Incredible read. Highly recommended. 🤗
I'm not big into rocker-types or big celebrity type romances, it just seems too unbelievable most of the time, like only in books or movies does that crap happen. I was surprised by this one... The prologue broke my heart cuz the buildup to that first kiss then it not ended like it did... My heart broke for Jake and it really made me not like Sawyer all that much, even though I understood where he was coming from, he was just a jerk about it... and it didn't end then... 10 years later, Jake comes back and I get why Sawyer is defensive and scared but there's really no need for him to be a jerk, my heart hurt for Jake several times. He knew he loved Sawyer, had forever and he'd accept anything Sawyer gave him, even if that meant him hurting in the process, I didn't like that for him, I thought he deserved better. It got there in the end though I was really happy with the way it turned out. A lot of people i'm seeing in the reviews, didn't feel the connection between these two, but I so did... You could tell Jake loved Sawyer, he was so patient and understanding... He was perfect. And seriously... the dirty mouths on these fellas... very nice!
The things I didn't like??
I knew exactly who the culprit was from the very beginning, it was glaringly obvious, and by mid way, I knew both of them, it had to be... why they waited so long was beyond me, it didn't really make sense, but... whatever, I was glad they both got the karmatic slap in the face they deserved.
Sawyers mom... I hate so much parents in stories that don't support their children. How can you just turn it off like that? The love for your child? Being a mother myself, there is not one thing my children could do to make me stop loving them. To make me not want them in my life, nothing in the world. I hated that for Sawyer and had I been his mother, I'd have felt guilty as hell for bringing the man into his life that attempted to kill him! Shame on her. She didn't deserve him and I'm glad Jakes family was so supportive, he didn't need her in his life like that.
Matt, I think Matt is disgusting, I hope he doesn't get his own story, it wouldn't be worth the paper it was wrote on. It seemed like they wanted to paint him in a better light when he met "Belle" but he was still just as disgusting and I couldn't stand anything that came out of his mouth.
I understand Ryder is the next book in this series, I'm not sure if I'll read it or not, I'm not big on the porn star or prostitute stories either. I don't like cheating and I don't see how you couldn't cheat if you're profession is sleeping with other people... I just dunno about it, I'll have to see.
This one was worth reading though, I'm glad I did.
But that's good enough for me. I must admit, I've been spoiled by Cecilia Tan's "Daron's Guitar Chronicles", the series of books that pretty much defined this genre. That series left me addicted to the power, the music, the fame, the loneliness, the disappointments of the top-flight rock musician - the man who has everything except what he really needs - someone who knows him, someone who loves him.
The interesting twist in this British author's foray into "gay rock musician" territory is that the two men were actually best friends through high school, one of whom came out, the other (who became the rock star) deeply stuck in the closet and terrified, once successful, of losing his fame and adoration should he acknowledge his needs, even to himself. Toss in a religious-nut mother and a stalker who's trying to kill him, and you've got a pretty exciting read.
What Ms. Haken does, particularly well, is paint a whole panoply of vivid characters, each with his or her own distinct personality, voice and quirks. She's also really good at pacing - while reading "Being Sawyer Knight", I never suffered a moment of boredom or that terrible urge to skip ahead.
It's not great literature, and it's not on a par with "Daron's Guitar Chronicles", but it is, indeed, a fun and sexy read. Well worth your time and effort.
I might have even given this book five stars, were it not for some really bad editing in several places. Don't get me wrong, "Being Sawyer Knight" is still quite a bit cleaner than many of the books I've suffered through in the M/M genre, but the editing errors proved to be distractions from an otherwise propulsive and exciting read. Every time I encountered lines like "pretending to be something your [sic] not", "Jakes [sic] eyebrows furrowed together" or "He's happy to buy chick's [sic] drinks", you tend to wonder whether the author and the editor have a clue what an apostrophe is for, and when you do, the action grinds to a halt.
Other than that, I did really enjoy this book, although I have to admit, I am a sucker for rock star romance! If you are too, read "being Sawyer Knight" - you'll really enjoy it.

Being Sawyer Knight is about well Sawyer Knight and his best friend Jake. Jake has loved Sawyer since they were 14 but never told him until Jake and his family have to move across the world to Australia. It's then at the age of 17 Jake puts a move on Sawyer. Sawyer is shocker confused about Jake's feelings towards him and in that moment pushes Jake away.
Fast forward ten years, Sawyer is one of the hottest lead singers around the front man for Souls of the Knight due to threats on their lives a new head of security is brought in to help. Enter Jake Reed ! sawyer hasn't seen his ex best friend in ten years but has often thought back to their last time together. Jake is still in love with his best friend decided to make a play for Sawyer whether Sawyer is ready or not !
This is probably one of THE best M/M books I've read. Sawyer is very reluctant to give in to his desires and Jake's advances but Jake is loving and patience with Sawyer helping him to embrace and discover who is really is and not to care about what others think.
This is my first book by Nicola Haken but it won't be my last, this book kept me up half the night and reading until my eyes were sore !
Highly recommend book for fans of M/M
"I'm taking what I want and what you need,"
"Someone might come in."
"I locked the door."
"They might hear."
"You'd better be quiet then."
Before Jake Reed moved away he needed to let his best friend know how he loved him so he did, he kissed him and that was the last time they ever saw each other but not before Sawyer told him he never wanted to see him again.
Ten years later Sawyer is in of the biggest bands. Fame. Girls. Money. He has it all But being who everyone wants is tiresome and lonely that is until a face from the past comes back into his life and now the head of his security team. He's not gay and he tries to tell his ex best friend just that but he can't seem to shake the feeling that draws him to Jake like a magnet.
Thank you, Sawyer."
"For f--ing you?"
"For completing me."
Afraid. Afraid of being who he is so he is who everyone needs him to be. He's ultimately afraid of not being loved so it's easy to sympathize with the why. Even though he's denying who he is and it hurts at time he's a really lovable guy. I love his relationship with Elle. He struggled and he makes some decisions that will have you shaking your head with a possible face palm or two but he grows and you kind of come out of this being proud of him for doing what's right for him.
Jake was amazing!! I loved his determination and confidence. It was never too much. I was, however, worried for him at times because he continued to put himself out there and was sure of his love when Sawyer wasn't, I wanted Jake to walk away and make Sawyer come to his senses and chase him but Jake was really great and believed in them enough for both of them. I loved seeing Jake with his family too and loved how protective he is because he took it beyond his job.
"Sawyer was hiding from the world. He was hiding from himself and I was going to find him."
These two were so cute together, freaking hot and tender too. The storyline was really good too, I thought I had it all figured out and while it went in the general direction that I had guessed it didn't go exactly how I expected and it was a nice surprise! I loved going on their journey and I can't wait to read more by Nicola Haken!
"You're gonna kill me, Jake Reed."
"But not before showing you the world, Sawyer Knight."
This is a refreshing addition to the MM romance genre and features one hot rockstar, Sawyer Knight, lead singer of Souls of the Knight and the man everyone seems to want to be a part of. He should be happy with his lot in life and on the face of things he has everything. But appearances can be deceptive.
Enter Jake, the new head of security of the band and also a huge blast from the past for Sawyer. Is Jake going to be able to break down the walls that Sawyer has built and find the real man behind the facade and in doing so will he make Sawyer realise just who lies behind the public personality everyone loves?
This is an absolutely amazing journey of discovery and self realisation and takes you on an emotional journey of a lost soul! You can't help but fall for Sawyer and when you realise what he has had to contend with during his years apart from Jake your heart actually breaks for the poor guy.
Jake is an amazingly strong character and is determined to get what he wants and after spending many years building a life of his own and making a huge success of himself too, it is clear that he will stop at nothing to get Sawyer to open up.
This is a heart-rending story at times and I cried and I laughed but you come through the other side with a real sense of satisfaction and sense of closure. Both characters develop through the book and in addition to the angst and heartbreak there are may moments of happiness and dare I say panty soaking hotness too! This is definitely one to read and if you've never ventured into the realms of MM romance it is certainly a great one to pop your MM cherry with too!
Congratulations Nicola on your first MM romance and holy crap what a hot read this is too! Be proud and thank you for bringing us two for one in the hot men stakes too! :) CANNOT WAIT for the next instalment adheres hoping for another "hot one"!!!
Five uber-sizzling stars!
I've read a couple of M/M books before but have to say this is the best so far. As a teenager Sawyer Knight shared a kiss with is best friend Jake then never saw Jake again until 10 years later when he shows up as head of security for Sawyer's band Souls of the Knight. To the outside world Sawyer has everything he could want but the one thing he is missing is someone to love him, he's also very confused about his sexuality ever since that kiss he's so scared about what people around him and the outside world will think of him been gay. Jake is the total opposite and embraces his sexuality he isn't worried about what other people think and always goes for what he wants, and what he wants is Sawyer but the road to true love is never easy as Jake and Sawyer will discover. This book has some very hot scenes and I loved the characters can't wait to read more from Nicola Haken this is definitely a 5* read.
