Editorial Reviews
Review
''The future will undoubtedly bring more visual learners; the disconnect between the education system and these learners will become a vast chasm if we continue on our present course. Being Visual is a strong step in the right direction, and should be required reading for anyone involved in education, parenting or the arts in today's visual generation.'' -- --Jeffrey Freed, co-author of Right-Brain Children in a Left-Brained World: Unlocking the Potential of Your ADD Child
''[Being Visual] weaves theory, personal experience and helpful suggestions into a unique tapestry. This is a powerful call to reinstate the arts in education.'' -- --Linda K. Silverman, Ph.D., Director, Gifted Development Center, author of Upside-Down Brilliance: The Visual-Spatial Learner

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023As a veteran educator and mom to a visual learner, I would definitely recommend this book. In utilizing many of the strategies, I was able to help my child learn to help herself. She found the activities engaging. This made study time a coveted part of our daily routine instead of an avoid at all cost task. After finding success at home with my daughter using the strategies implemented in this book, I was able to implement the same within my classroom. My students were actively engaged and looked forward to these activities weekly.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2012Thank you Bette!! It is people like you who, one by one, will help our great nation get back on track to doing the things that are necessary to turn our collective ship around and point it in the right direction, as we appear to be drifting away from what we all know is right. That direction includes one where we, as adults, are setting the compass towards what truly is important in life, and it all starts with recognizing how each and every child (i.e. our future) learns best. The industrial, clock-punching era is long gone, and the new focus has to include empowering every young mind with the ability to think creatively at a young age when minds are open to endless dreams and possibilities. "Being Visual" provides fresh insight into how we, as adults, can help guide our children to a better future by being in tune with their preferred (innate) learning styles and subsequently fueling those creative sparks with ignitable kindling.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2014As a future teacher, I find this to be a valuable resource for incorporating visual learning into my lessons. I also love how I am better able to understand myself as a visual thinking through reading this text. I would highly recommend that EVERY teacher add this book to their personal collections!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2013I am so better educated now in the early childhood field after reading this amazing book. The insight from Bette in how we humans learn has made me painfully aware of how our education system needs to change!! Thank you Bette & amazon. Com !!! Faitj
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2014The book is not based on actual research -- just her supposition from various bits of research. It's a shameless self-promotion of her art program.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2015This author breaks people down into two learning styles - left brain thinking, known as auditory-sequential thinking and right brain thinking known as visual-spatial. The author feels that in general, schools teach to the left-brain with lessons given auditorially and sequentially. She feels that teaching art and teaching more visually can help visual learners in many ways.
She advocates use of graphic organizers - which many schools are using a lot now and I, not being a visual learner, despise. I do think that art education is important and that we should teach in ways that will reach children with all sorts of learning styles. The author created a program called the Young Rembrandts art program and she tells about her program in the book. I received this book free to reveiw from Netgalley.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2012Being Visual is a MUST READ for any parent that is truly intrested in the way their child learns and sees the world.
Being Visual is also a MUST READ for any adult that may have had some questions about their own education experience.
