There's a good chance I over oiled it, or that vegetables oil is just too heavy/ sticky and that by cleaning it so much I hurt the non stick finish. But judging from my experience with this waffle iron, I'd say it wasn't just user error.
SO, enough about that my old iron, here's why I love my Oster waffle iron and gave it 5 stars.
It's works AMAZINGLY well! Seriously, I love making waffles now! I've had this iron about 1-2 months and I've already made waffles at least 5 times. I'm pretty sure I only made waffles 1-2 a YEAR in my other iron. I believe that a cook should love using their tools and I love this iron.
It's fun to use, being a flip iron and all
It heats up very fast
The light system works and makes sense overall (2 lights on top, one red, one green. And one on bottom for when you flip it. The top red one means it's on, the green one means it's heated up and ready to fill. The green light on the bottom turns on when your waffle is done and ready to take out).
The non stick surface works great! Including the outer edge and drip plate. I've made plain, blueberry and chocolate chip waffles and none of them stuck to the iron. I did have one or two waffles stick a little on my first or second plain batch, but I just sprayed it with some more Pam and it was fine. And when I've occasionally over filled it, the mess wipes right off the edges and the drip plate which catches everything and washes clean super easily
Speaking of, I love the drip plate. It works perfectly!
Clean up is very quick and easy. I wipe it out with a dry paper towel and usually that's enough. 5 minutes tops and this perfectionist is satisfied.
I love how well it compacts for storage
Price is decent
Reviews were good
Company seems to care about customer satisfaction
The only con I can think of is that though they were smart enough to design a groove for the drip plate to slide into when the unit is turned sideways for storage, my plate doesn't quite fit the groove enough to stay in it. But it still stores well.
A couple tips:
Like some reviews and the instructions suggest, Pam cooking spray works great! Definitely worth buying/ using. I spray once at the beginning and maybe once during if I think it needs it.
Krusteaz pancake mix works very well with this, and speeds up the whole process. I just follow the waffle instructions. I also do a half and half batter with Krusteaz and Kodiak (to add more fiber and protein) pancake mixes.
Flavored waffles work well, like I said, so try out berry or chocolate waffles, they're delicious.
Freeze left over waffles for later. Use a toaster to reheat.
I would gladly buy this waffle iron again, and I'll likely give it as a gift/ definitely recommend it to others.
I hope others find this review helpful! If you did, can you please rate it as helpful :) thanks!
-It's not nearly as bulky as it looks. My boyfriend has an average amount of counter space, so this was important.
-Heats up quickly, maybe 2-3 minutes
-Doesn't burn waffles on the highest setting
-Lights are bright (not one of those super dim lights you can barely tell if it's on)
-Individual quarters break off easily when removing
-Easy to clean: the plate at the bottom just comes off, and the sides wipe down easily if the batter spills out.
-Handle doesn't heat up during cooking
-Flip function is a little clunky. I struggled with it once or twice.
-I wish there was more flexibility with crispiness. You can make the waffles soft or only kinda crispy.
-The "ding" that notifies you to flip/unflip is a little unclear. Read the instructions for that part.
-The quarters tend to separate and fall out if you're not careful. If you really, really want a huge waffle to dig into and not four separate pieces, I'd recommend a different model.
Bottom line: I'd recommend it for the price. Made adequately crispy waffles, and after one run-through with the instructions this model is pretty easy to use.
