I was grateful to learn that the Belgians expect you to shake their hands firmly and look them in the eye. But I want to make one minor point. It's wise, as the guide says, not to bring up the tormented question of languages in Belgium, given its history. However, do not let that scare you off from speaking French in Flanders, if you know it and find Vlaams too hard. I constantly heard customers and patrons asking questions in French and waiters sometimes even asking them if they understood French. Obviously, English is used with Japanese tourists and others not likely to speak French, but French is not taboo. And I often fell back on it when my Vlaams ran out.

This book has good content, but it is a bit boring. Sometimes the culture smart series are fun to read. While all the information in this text was true and relevant and useful, it was not as engaging as books in the series on other countries.

Belgium is rarely on anyone's "must see" list but perhaps it should be. For a small country it has a wonderful variety of things to experience, from chocolate and fries, to lacemakers and M. le Pis, to the Grand Place in Brussells. This book does an admirable job of showcasing the obvious while also shedding a light on some of the less well known things to do in this complex and charming part of Europe. Anyone heading to Belgium would benefit from reading this short, user-friendly volume.

This guide focuses on Belgian customs and attitudes more than where the attractions are. Belgium, having such a split personality, makes this guide uniquely useful. For me, interacting with the people and the culture is a major part of the experience of travel so this is a nice primer. This is an accessory guide and should not be your main one.

A great guide to the culture and customs of Belgium. I would not visit any other country without reading the appropriate book for that nation even though I lived and traveled in Europe for 5 years previously

I found our recent trip to Belgium ... well, Brussels and parts of Flanders ... very much an eye-opener. I picked up this Culture Smart book afterward and have enjoyed many a good guffaw in the author's cautions and general advice to just enjoy the almost surreal outlook and humour you'll come across in Belgium. Many people like to knock Brussels. I found it to be a very interesting city disguising itself as an uninteresting one. And there wasn't a time of day that we crossed Le Grand' Place in Brussels without finding that the slight change of light (which happens throughout the day with Belgium's ongoing cloud show) didn't reveal that astonishing square in a new aspect. The author captured a certain sense of Belgium which constantly prompted my mental revisiting of magnificent Ghent, lovely Bruges, and amazing Antwerp -- to say nothing of complex Brussels!

We are going to Belgum in October and this book is just what I wanted.
I know the country is divided by languages and the book advised me not to bring this up unless my guests bring it up. Also, to bring a gift when invited to someone's home and try to reciprocate.
The political parties are diverse and much more complicated than ours.
Excellent preparatory book for our visit.
Thanks
Fred T.
