My first read by Alexndria House, but no desire to read another. After a few chapters, I had to stop and re-read the glowing 100+ reviews as I thought my eyes were deceiving me. I found it average and without that "page turner" appeal. The characters Rene and Lorenzo were over-played without enough variation in their relationship or development of other minor characters. The sex scenes were repetitive and lacked that "get-you-all-hot-and-bothered"appeal (ladies you know what I mean) although there was plenty of dirty talk it was not a turn on factor (for me). While Rene/Doc and Zo both enjoyed cunnilingus, she shockingly only once reciprocated with a single act of fellatio - near the end of the book. I almost quit reading when Rene's ex-husband began making ridiculous divorce demands. I thought what an excellent opportunity for her rich prospective BF to hire a "real litigator" as there were lots of legal grounds to deny any of his ridiculous demands, especially "child support" of his illigitimate kid. And the big and tough Doc, w/o a fight wanted to acquiesce and give him "anything" he wanted "w/o a fight", After waiting a year to file for a divorce from Robert she had some Judochristian hang up about getting involved as she felt "still married"...Please! I had to settle for Zo's "hood" antics to scare the beJesus out of Robert, who made no attempt to retaliate or get even; he just RAN scared whenever he encountered them. OK. If that wasn't enough Rene's dramatic antics during childbirth were laughable and absurd; as yet I remind you for a midwife were 'way over the top". I opted for midwife assisted childbirth for my first child and yes it hurt more than I could have imagined and the nurses referred to me as "Ms. Lamaze" while I cussed up a blue streak, yet without one tear during 16 hours of labor...just b/c I knew it wouldn't help. My frantic breathing techniques "seemed" to help, but not as much as I'd been told they would. And although my aunt said "It's a pain you'll soon forget"...I never did. Yet Rene's instant rebuttal the same day was, "I'd do it again in a heartbeat", which we know millions of women do. I truly was disappointed in the impressive "Doc" as a "strong" black fmale" character or role model, on all fronts. I learned a lot through researching the differences between midwifery and doula care, which the book did not expound on. Yet, I'm not sorry I completed it with it's best appeal being the dope dealing gangsta turned author and "boy gets girl" did not disappoint. And also to the author's (and editor's) credit typos and missed errors were at a minimal and the author's timing and transitions were really above average.
Lorenzo Higgs has money in the bank, and a sex appeal that is lyrically hypnotic to the average woman…is he aware of it…Mos Def…is he consumed with his swag…not even. Everything serves its purpose in his life…he’s meticulous, centered, and then she appears. The calm to his raging storm…the spice to his culinary skills…but what will it take for a woman like her to accept a man like him…is that even possible? Will what he feels for Renee stand a chance when he has a checkered past and she comes from privilege and promise? When life has done all it can…but then it gives you a second wind…will yesterday’s heartbreak forsake your today’s hope? I love love love this read…the characters were so cute. Their dialogue, their vulnerabilities, their weaknesses, their romantic trysts, their love play were all relevant in every scene. I applaud the author for delving into different twists of the unpredictable in this read…and fulfilling it. For every plot that seemed to be thrown in the storyline, she elaborated on purpose and closed it with a resounding affirmation. Again, Ms. House pens such scorching sex scenes with each of her reads, and even though their sex life was on 10+, she captivated the readers and satisfied them with a believable plot and completed it with a vivid ending. By far my very favorite!!! Dare to be different!! #Winning 5*****
