Top Customer Reviews
What looks like a nice, broad cradle of plastic for your phone in is actually just for looks. Without a case the phone is never supported by the bottom or back of the dock. Instead, it hovers awkwardly, supported by barely more than the connector. The lightening connector on the dock does angle back slightly, but it's not enough for an iPhone sans-case to actually have any support. (see attached picture for maximum lean angle and gaps between phone and dock.)
All this puts a lot of stress on the lightening port, and I've had issues with the phone disconnecting or rapidly alternating between connected and disconnected when the desk is lightly jostled (to the extent that someone walking by would cause issues.) It's totally unreliable and yet another Belkin product I regret buying. You'd think I would have learned by now.
UPDATE (same day)
I bought two of these at the same time. Just plugged in the second one and it works fine. Not a good sign of quality to have 1 out of 2 be bad! What surprises me is that it could even be a bad dock, its quite a simple product, nothing more than a designed stand and a cable. I guess they just got the cable wrong. Lucky i didn't plug this into a wall, might've fried my iphone! If the iMac says it draws too much power, that can't be good!
UPDATE (few days later)
As it turns out the SECOND one I bought has problems too. While the first one didn't charge the phone (phone never knew it was plugged into anything) AND caused a USB overcurrent condition (draws too much power), the second one eventually started popping the USB overcurrent error as well. To be clear, my original apple charging cable works fine, no USB overcurrent errors. To make things even more interesting, I have the belkin thunderbolt express dock, so I plugged this iphone dock into it and tried charging my iphone 5s. Some 10 minutes later, the iMac reported that the "USB Hub" was reporting an overcurrent condition! You can see this in the console log here:
So even belkins own USB hub didn't like the iphone dock!
As a technician, I know I didn't have to bother with this, but for good measure, I went ahead and reset iMac SMC and PRAM, and I still got the USB overcurrent issue with these belkin docks.
While belkin is asking me questions via email, they have yet to provide a solution. Unfortunately I can't just ship them back to amazon for refund because I live outside USA, and the cost to return to amazon would exceed the cost of just buying another brand. Belkin has said they can work this out no matter where in the world I am, so we'll see if they hold true to that. Will update review later after belkin resolution.
Belkin failed to resolve this with me. They kept running me around the ringer, trying to get me to waste my time on phones with silly techs that would have me do silly things. They failed to recognize and resolve the problem expeditiously.
2 DOCKS PURCHASED
1 DOESN'T WORK AT ALL
THE OTHER PRODUCES USB OVERLOAD NOTICES FROM MAC NO MATTER WHAT MAC YOU PLUG IT INTO
Clearly somehow, I got a bad batch, and they should've simply replaced or refunded them without all the incredible amount of hassle they tried to run me through.
BELKIN is now a bad brand name in my household!
I bought one for my nightstand (tiny) and one for my (also small) computer desk. Dock Very sturdy. heavyweight. phone fits securely and without any difficulty. Can turn on phone without removing it from dock.
Very snug fit on cable connector. I have a thin case on the iPhone 5 and it connected just fine without removing case (case does not have front, only a protective plastic back and sides. Not top or bottom. When I go out, I put phone in case into a leather, clip-on carrying case for protection.) The iPhone case is the Empire slim fit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DR1P4HS). Update: Last night I noticed that the phone seemed to have a big space between it and the back of the dock. I took phone off, very gently eased connector clip backward, and now phone rests securely against back. Connector clip moves forward and back to accommodate different case thicknesses (or no case at all)
Update (Oct 2015): does not work with iPhone 6S+ if it's in a protective case. The cases now wrap around bottom so phone cannot connect to lightning pin. Works fine if phone has no cover on it, however
(Update) If bluetooth headset connected to phone, can make calls without removing phone from dock, either by voice control (that's what my bluetooth is) or by pressing contact number or dialing on phone - while still in dock. If someone calls you, you can see who it is without taking phone off dock, so great to see who's calling without touching phone (and able to just ignore telemarketers, who always hang up and never leave messages).
Dock itself much heavier than I expected from description, which pleased me, as my nightstand wood is warped, so things can be a little unsteady unless placed just right. Dock doesn't move at all: just the right size. Very steady
The only thing that surprised me was that it said it came with its own power source: a four foot cord inseparable from the dock that ends in a USB port. I guess that's for syncing to your computer or something. That means You have to have your own plug that accepts a USB connection to use the dock to charge: it will not plug into the wall by itself
High quality product. Surprised that it cost so little. Setup about 90 seconds, including moving the nightstand to reach the surge protector power outlet and undo the original phone charging cords.
Will update if any problems are encountered.
