I needed to add this to my (somewhat clunky) laptop in order to get it communicating with my "vintage" iPod, and other peripherals I hope to get. It took a little bit of coaxing to get it installed on my Windows 2000 platform, as it kept bringing up some odd warning about compatibility not being pre-established in the software, or something like that. But I kept overriding the warning and after just a little work with it, everything is working as it should...which is more than I can say for some other supplemental connectors I've used in the past.

Apparently the CPU in this laptop, an AMD Athlon-XP-M causes the computer to lock up when you try to use this card to up grade this laptop to a USB 2.0.

I carefully looked over all of the PCMCIA USB 2.0 cards that I cound find out there. Fry's has a good selection as well. Out of all of them the Belkin F5U222 looked to me to be the best quality one, plus it came with a 5v external power supply.

I have a Toshiba laptop that came with USB 1.1 ports. Data transfers to my flash drive and an external hard drive seemed extremely slow compared to my desktop computer which has USB 2.0, hence searching for an alternate solution. I briefly considered a USB 2.0 / Firewire card, but hadn't found any with good reviews. Since I don't have any firewire devices either decided to just go with USB 2.0.

I didn't use the driver disk that came with the card, downloaded the one from the website (ver 2.41). Installed that first then plugged the card in. XP found it and installed the drivers without a hitch.

My first test was to transfer a 400 MB file to the flash drive, then copy it back onto both the desktop and using both laptop USB ports. The desktop USB 2.0 took 45 seconds to copy the file, laptop USB 1.1 took 6:41 min to copy it, and the F5U222 took 41 seconds. Big improvement!

One interesting thing I noted was my external USB hard drive did not require the 5v power supply, but my flash drive did. It must draw more than 350 ma, which could explain why its never worked with my frontside USB ports on my desktop. I saw XP start to show the drive in the 'my computer' window, and then it would go away. It kept doing that until I plugged in the 5v supply.

So the F5U222 will work without the external 5v supply, but you may have devices that need it so its good that its included with.

I highly recommend this card so far. If I change my mind later on due to reliability issues will update this review.

Plug & Play in Win 2000 SP4

After considering many different brands and models of USB 2.0 PCMCIA adapters for my Dell Inspiron 4100, I chose this Belkin model. It seems many people have problems with just about every brand & model of this type of adapter. All I can says is that I plugged the card into my laptop and my Windows 2000 SP4 operating system (OS) detected it and loaded a driver, without any assistance from me. I did find that the card would not recognize my SanDisk 1GB Cruzer Flash drive or 160GB Western Digital Passport drive, until I plugged in the supplied power adapter. ALL USB 2.0 adapters apparently require external power for just about everything, except for some low-power devices like a USB mouse. This is where I believe most people are running into problems, especially for USB 2.0 adapters that are packaged and sold without an external power supply. Also, you must be running Windows Xp with the SP2 update or Windows 2000 with SP4 update. Older OS like Win 98 and ME will require loading the appropriate drivers on the CD provided by Belkin. You must also use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon before attempting to remove the adapter. If you don't know how to do this check your specific operating system Help. Removing the adapter with the laptop turned off will also cause problems when powered back up. Windows will detect this as an "Unsafe Removal" and may not detect the adapter if hot-plugged back in. You may then have to reboot before the adapter will be detected - NOW, you probably get an idea WHY SO MANY PEOPLE WRITE BAD REVIEWS, when it's just user error!
