I bought this because I wanted to have a switch on one side of my living room, near the doorway, that would turn on the light on the opposite side of the living room. This allowed me to do it without having to rewire my apartment and it works great. My only complaint, and the reason I gave it four stars instead of five stars, is that after a few years the remote switch wears out from being pressed on and off so often and you can’t buy a replacement , you have to buy a whole new unit.

Overall it works very well. I have it set up behind a cabinet and the remote has no trouble turning it on and off even though it's out of sight. My only small complaint is that it uses a size 23A 12V battery which is something that I don't typically have lying around the house. When the first one died I ordered some more, and they were cheap, only about a dollar each, but I wonder why they couldn't have used a more common type of battery. But otherwise I'm totally happy with it and recommend it.

Why is this discontinued? It seems a real shame.

I am one of those weirdoes who does not want to overcharge electronic devices. I generally charge my phone before it hits 30-40%, and I stop charging before it his 100%. Actually, I usually stop it at 80%. This is all in my strange quest to preserve battery life.

The main thing is that I don't like to drain the battery all the way (I do this once a month if I want to calibrate the meter, but that's it), and I don't like to have it keep charging once it's at 100%. Once a device is full, it "trickle charges" to avoid overcharging, meaning it is allowed to dissipate some charge, then refill, over and over. My phone used to do this all night long. Big deal? No, but I'd like to avoid it.

Well, this device can help me avoid it. I generally just set it for 3 hours, plug in all my stuff that is at half or less battery, and leave it. After 3 hours, it shuts off, so nothing is trickle charging, at least not for two long.

Unfortunately, unless my phone is totally empty, it doesn't really even take 3 hours to fully charge. So, I'd personally like more options. 30 minutes isn't long enough, but 3 hours is too long, in other words.

Truthfully, you probably don't care about any of this. You probably just want to plug something in but not have it keep draining power after a certain amount of time. If 30 minutes, 3 hours or 6 hours will suit you, you should do fine with this.

So, I love this. I think it's a brilliant idea that should continue to be sold.

The caveats:
How about a timer rather than only being able to choose from 3 settings?
Bright LED might annoy you (it tells you whether it's on or off, but I put electrical tape of it, as it annoys me when trying to sleep)
For what it does, it's sort of expensive (but I am no expert in this kind of stuff, so I don't know what it costs to make)

It seems high-quality and works really well. I wish there were more variety in this type of product, but maybe my particular need is not a widespread enough one for anyone to care.

I bought this energy-saving outlet for one specific purpose - my flatiron. As you may guess, I did not do this because I was concerned so much with saving energy (though that's nice too), but rather was concerned with safety. Although I quite like my flatiron, it is not one of those that has a timed off setting, which means I can accidentally leave it on (and have done so twice). Even when I haven't left it on, sometimes I can't remember if I've turned it off, which means that I usually end up turning my car around and running up to my apartment to check, which is frustrating and is almost always a waste of time. This gadget has saved me that misery.

I now have it constantly set to the 30 minute setting. Since I have long hair, it usually take me around 20 to 25 minutes to flatiron my hair, which means that even if I do happen to leave my flatiron on, within five to ten minutes of finishing my hair, this Belkin device will cut the power. Fabulous! This gives me peace of mind. Why don't I just get into the habit of unplugging my iron every time? No real answer, I just can't seem to get into the habit.

This device is ridiculously easy. There is a switch on the side where you can set it to 30 minutes, 3 hours, or 6 hours, depending on how long you want whatever is plugged in to receive electricity. Then there is a button on the top that you press to activate the charging time and the button glows green to let you know it's on. Until you do this, whatever you've plugged in will not charge or power on.

There are a couple minor downsides. This is pretty bulky, so expect it to take up the majority of your outlet. I have to unplug it to plug anything else in the other outlet. Annoying, but certainly not a deal-breaker; after all, you'd imagine that something like this would have to be somewhat bulky. Second, the green light on top is very faint and I usually have use my hand to shade the button to see whether it's on or off. This could be a good or bad thing depending on where you plan on using this. If you're using it someplace you plan on sleeping, you may like this feature. In the age of DVRs, computers, external hard drives, etc. that always seem to emit some sort of light, even when not being used, sometimes it's nice not to have another glowing object in the room.

Overall, excellent product that works well and is priced fairly.

50-50 chance of BURN OUT

I have bought six of these, some here and some other online places. The button that shuts off the power completely (not the always on dual outlet) burns out within a few days. That's ridiculous. I try everything that I have read online, including resetting it and nothing happens. And you also can't shut that button off manually, it no longer clicks when you press it, and stays off. I don't think that's a very good average for something this expensive. I only needed 3 of these, the other 3 are replacements(one didn't work right out of the box). One of which I foolishly just bought. Some of the places that I have them are a bit hard to access (like behind furniture etc) and I like the idea of the power being shut completely off easily, and the idea of these is really amazing, but what would be even more amazing if they actually worked. There's only a 50-50 chance these will work. Very disappointing.

So my first order was lost in the mail, so Amazon was very helpful, and rushed me out a new shipment. It arrived in 2 days. Unfortunately the remote did not work!! The surge bar works fine, but the remote did nothing at all. i followed the trouble shooting and made sure the channel was the same on the remote and the bar, and then tried every possible combination, .. nothing. Thought about asking for a refund, but opted to go ahead and give Belkin one more chance (I have had negative experiences with Belkin technology before) by requesting a replacement unit.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, and update this review once I get a replacement unit.

I REALLY HOPE it is just one bad unit...

I have been using this for 2 years as a remote light switch for my smaller bedroom
(I did not have to run new wiring to a standard switch for my headboard reading lamps & floor lamps)
This was exactly what I needed and still working great.

It's a bit bulky and feels a little cheap, to be honest, which surprised me as I"m a big fan of Belkin products. Mine seems to have a piece rattling about inside, not sure if that normal? But it works and that's all I care about.
I use it when I need to charge my laptop and want to be able to walk away and leave it. I only wish there was an option between half an hour and 3 hours, its a huge jump. I wish there was a 1-hour option, but as I say it works and it's probably saving me electricity and my laptop battery.

They call this a "Conserve Socket Energy-Saving Outlet" but in use it really is a "Protection Outlet". I had purchased a Rowenta Pro Steam Iron Station - 2 heating coils, one for the iron ,one for the steam generator, I was surprised that it didn't have the auto shut off like many irons - this is an 1800 watt appliance - so I purchased the Belkin to prevent problems if I forgot to turn the iron off. Yes it works just as they say - "Great" I have it set for half an hour, and it will turn the iron off - need a little longer, just push the button.
I was worried when someone wrote, that the 2 they bought had melted - but I just don't see it, at 1800 watts the Belkin just stays at room temperature - no heat generated what so ever. So have tested this one for 2 months, and purchased a second one as well.
