NO VIRTUAL KEYBOARD SOFTWARE! Perfect for Mechanical Keyboards and difficult workstation setups.

First off, I did not buy this for the video switching. At any given time I will have to use information from one screen to complete a task on the second, so switching video is not my purpose. I bought this exclusively for the peripheral compatibility. That being said this switch is great, and it is the only switch under $50 that worked with my setup.

I am using two machines, a MacBook Pro, and a custom PC tower running Windows 7. I have a Ducky 87 key mechanical keyboard(no number pad), 2 external Hard Drives and USB keypad and USB Mouse.

The previous KVM switches I have tried would not recognize the keyboard. After much research, I found that many low end switches will not be compatible with high end functioning keyboards. So if you are someone who works with a high end keyboard, be warned. This is the only switch that works for me so far.

USB HUB SUPPORT

Even though the Flip only has 2 USB ports. It is compatible with using a separate powered USB hub. I have an IOGear 4 port USB 3.0 hub as my option.

Plug your keyboard directly into the Flip. Then connect your other (powered) USB Hub to the other(mouse) usb port on the Flip. Connect all the rest of your devises, (mouse, ExHD, keypad) to the USB Hub. I now have 5 devises hooked up to this 2 port Switch.
Everything was recognized on both Mac, and Windows machines.

NO VIRTUAL SOFTWARE

This switch does not switch control instantly for a reason. It does not use any embedded software to maintain the connections to the uncontrolled computer. That is the reason why this one works for me while the others have failed.

Other switches use virtual software embedded in the switch to mimic a keyboard. So the signal sent to the perspective computer is not the actual signal from your keyboard but more of a generic copy of standard keyboard. If your keyboard differs too much from the virtual software in the switch, you will have keyboard functions that will not work.

From what I can tell the Belkin Flip uses the raw signal from your peripheral, so there are no conflicts. The downside is you may have to wait several seconds for everything to connect.

Does not work with Windows 7

None of the descriptions mention this, but the box this product commes in says it supports several Windows platforms including Vista. Windows 7 is not listed as being supported. The Belkin web site is also misleading as it does not mention what Windows operating system is supported until you dig into the support pages and see that Windows 7 is not listed. Well, it is not working on my Windows 7 computer. When you search the user forums, you realize that this is a common issue with this product. Belkin's silence on the issue is not helpful. I don't know what they hope to accomplish by misleading indviduals with Windows 7 to get this product. So, I contacted Belkin and am waiting for a response. If you don't have Windows 7, the product works well wilth XP and was easy to set up but you would be wasting your money considering that Microsoft is about to release Windows 8.

Makes my customers office solutions easier.

I have a couple of clients that have older software that will never be upgraded to Win 7 or 8, so they still have to run an XP machine.

When they upgraded their machines to newer versions of Windows, they found several things they couldn't accomplish in their software running in the newer versions of Windows. THey needed a solution to run parallel systems, and this flip switch was the answer.
They now have the older XP and newer machines running together using 1 each Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, and speaker set. We made the bacgrounds different enough on the machines so they would be able to tell at a glance which machine they were on.

I also put green and gold stickers on the front of the machines so they know which one is which. The LED on the remote does turn green and gold (amber) to show you, but having the visual reference made it a little easier for them.

Overall, this is extremely easy to set up and use, if you only have 2 computers you need ro share peripherals with, and the price is right so customers don't gulp at the cost of it.

Good once you work it out

I had bought this to have my work laptop and my home pc running off one large monitor/keyboard. I initially didn't like it as since it was VGA, all I could only get a really low resolution from the work laptop to be projected onto the large monitor.

I eventually worked out the issue. In Windows 8 under Devices -> Second Screen, instead of Duplicate, if you pick "Second screen only", then you can set up the resolution nice and high, so it then looks appropriate on the big monitor.

If you run it in "Duplicate" mode, you can only get whatever the max resolution of the smallest screen is.

Once I worked that out, it works well. Sometimes there is a little lag in recognising the keyboard and mouse from my desktop, but it's not too annoying, and doesn't happen all the time.
