I received the replacement and the blue light came on and stayed on once plugged into the USB port. I can't believe how small it is. The software that came with it installed without any problems. It recognized my new Bluetooth mouse and printer and had them up and running within minutes. My OS is Windows XP SP3.
I had the adapter first installed in the front USB port of my PC to keep an eye on it during initial installation. I do need the front USB ports for other devices so I relocated the adapter to a port in the back of the PC. I was unsure of how that location would work out but it turned out not to be a problem at all. The mouse works perfectly fine and now I don't have to hassle with a cord getting tangled or caught. I absolutely love it and am thinking of getting other Bluetooth enabled devices!
Mac Pro (MacPro4,1) - Quad 2.66Ghz (w/ 12 GB of memory). In which I won't be able to pin point the upgrade that made bluetooth not work, but I installed another 3 TB's of drives, along with added a video card and a 3rd Samsung 24" HDTV monitor. I have ready elsewhere that adding a 3rd monitor made some other 2009 Mac Pro's bluetooth start not working properly. Well mine was one of them, that was working flawlessly up till I did some updates. I already had a wireless keyboard and magic mouse (as well as the older mighty mouse).
One day ... not even right after I did the upgrades, we will say it was a week later. I came into the office and the magic mouse just wouldn't track well and became unstable as for movements. So I tried to clean the sensor and check it over, I also have 2 Macbook Pro's and another Mac Pro at home so I just switched out mice (Magic Mouse and Mighty Mouse) and the problem didn't ever follow the devices but stayed with the machine (Mac Pro). So I determined after awhile that it had to be either the 3 monitors and how close they were to the mouse or had to be some kind of interference or weak bluetooth signal from inside the Mac Pro.
So I ordered this Belkin Mini Bluetooth adapter. I installed it, and re-connected my bluetooth devices and problem has since been resolved. Granted instead of plugging the adapter into the front or back of the Mac Pro, I connected it to a Toshiba USB Hub that is right off my office desk, to get even better reception because even plugging the bluetooth adapter into the front of the Mac Pro it still has some minor issues... so who knows what interference is getting in the way.
Regardless, this fixed it. I highly recommend this for anyone who has had the same issues with their bluetooth mice, usually not the keyboard but probably would fix that as well.
I don't know about range as I only use it for a keyboard, which is right on top of the machine - it might have dop-out issues with a bluetooth speaker system or something else that needs to be real-time. Good, solid device, definitely worth the $10-15 to replace an getting-flakey-sometimes-works-sometimes-doesn't internal bluetooth.
I've been battling BT connection issues for the past year... forcing me to go to the wired keyboard and mouse. No more! This solved the problem quickly and inexpensively.
