so i start by saying that i have an older model 27" iMac i7 (the 2010 model i believe... maybe the 2011, it's not terribly old) and i wanted to hook up my new 2012 macbook pro to it, using the iMac as a monitor. the apple "geniuses" told me that i would be able to use a standard thunderbolt cable to make this happen. they were INCORRECT. if you want to hook up your 2012 macbook pro to your older mini-display iMac, this is the cable you need.

hook this cable between the two devices and press command-f2 on the iMac in order to make the iMac display the macbook pro on its screen.

i am simply writing this because there seems to be very little accurate info out there as to whether or not you can actually do what i am describing. to put it simply... YES, you can. this is the cable you need.

I tried this cable with a 2011 macbook pro and '09 27in imac to get 2560x1440. It works, but there is screen and pixel flickering. An apple store representative told me to try the Kanex mini displayport to mini displayport. I bought one from microcenter and it works great. I can now use the iMac in target display mode at 2560x1440 with no flickering. BTW - I also tried to use the thunderbolt cable, but that wouldn't work. I thought thunderbolt was supposed to be backward-compatible with minidisplayport but I guess it isn't.

Starting with the introduction of the first 27 inch iMac in 2009, Apple included a little-known, and little-used feature called "Target Display Mode" which allows you to use the 27 inch iMac as an external display. However, with changing times and technologies, the cables necessary to accomplish this feat have shifted along with the requirrements to pull this off.

The tricky part is that the connectors and cables look exactly the same, even though the technologies are different. So, for example if you have a 2010 iMac with Mini DisplayPort and a 2015 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt, you'd think that a Thunderbolt cable would work, given that the connectors are exactly the same.

To make it even more confusing, Thunderbolt as a technology is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort but *not* vice versa. For Target Display Mode between a non-Thunderbolt iMac and a newer Thunderbolt-equipped Mac, you'll need this Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable. Same goes if you want to hook up an older non-Thunderbolt Mac to your Mini DisplayPort equipped iMac.

There's an excellent Apple Knowlegebase article on the subject, which tells you all you need to know - I'd reccomend that anyone looking to purchase this cable read this article - I did - just Google "Target display mode KB"

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I use this cable to connect my MacBook Air (using a Thunderbolt port) to my late 2009 27" iMac with Mini DisplayPort, in Target Display Mode. This lets me use the iMac as a large second screen for my MacBook Air. The cable works perfectly and is a good length. It doesn't seem cheap or flimsy.

Be aware that if you want to connect two Thunderbolt devices, this cable won't work - you'll need a Thunderbolt cable. It will work with a Thunderbolt port only if the other device has a mini DisplayPort (like the late 2009 iMacs). It's little confusing because mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt look exactly the same because they have the same physical connection, but the technology is different.

Mac compatibility guide:
Mini DisplayPort ---> Mini DisplayPort YES
Mini DisplayPort ---> Thunderbolt YES
Thunderbolt ---> Mini DisplayPort YES
Thunderbolt ---> Thunderbolt NO

When I received this cable, I connected it to my computer and LCD panel. I then configured my LCD for displayport 1.2. The image quality looked fantastic, and the colors were much more vibrant. I thought I found the perfect cable. That is until the second day of using it, my LCD panel no longer detects a signal. I had never had issues with Belkin cables before, and I considered Belkin a go-to company for cables. I realize so many users are posting good results with this cable, but take that with a grain of salt. Perhaps I am just unlucky and got a poor quality cable out of the lot? I returned this cable back to Amazon for a refund, and Amazon gave me a refund quickly.

After a bit of research, I found and ordered a certified displayport cable made by Eizo. The replacement cable works so far.

i bought 2 of these from cable woo (another amazon vendor) to hook my pc/mba and pro to my iMac, but i was cautious cause they were cheaper. well, low and behold, they didn't work. but i didn't know up front it was the cheap cables initially. i bought 2 cables, so my thinking was what would the chances be i bought 2 bad cables? i spent 2 hrs on the phone troubleshooting with apple thinking it was something wrong with my iMac. after a couple days apple called me back and suggested to try the "belkin" brand in particular. so i did, and now i can play my pc games on the 27" iMac which is in my opinion the best monitor available. happy as a pig in poo.

Like some other reviewers I use this to connect my work laptop to my 2010 27" iMac using Target Display Mode.

90% of the time it works flawlessly, but occasionally I'll get flickering. It seems to be related to interference from the adjacent USB or power cables (they're all on the same side on MacBook Pros). Moving the cables around a bit makes it go away. I would probably recommend checking out the Kanex cable recommended by another reviewer, especially since it's something like a third the price.

It also works well with my Thunderbolt MacBook Air. However, you apparently can't use a pre-Thunderbolt (i.e. mini DisplayPort) video source to drive a Thunderbolt iMac's display.
