From the Manufacturer

The Belkin Miracast Video Adapter wirelessly displays movies, games, photos, and apps from your smartphone, tablet, or Windows 8.1 laptop on your HDTV, so you can enjoy the same content on a much larger screen. With 1080p resolution, this adapter provides a full, rich picture as you stream videos or play games. It's easily installed by plugging into your HDMI port, and its small, wireless design keeps it out of your way.

Wirelessly Displays Smartphone Content on HDTV Screen

The Belkin Miracast Video Adapter lets you display movies, games, apps, and other content from your smartphone, tablet, or Windows 8.1 laptop on your HDTV screen. Share photos with your friends without having to crowd around a small display, stream music through your HDTV speakers for better sound, or watch movies and TV shows already downloaded and saved to your device.

HDMI Extension Cable for Wall-Mounted HDTVs

An included HDMI extension cable gives you the option of running a cable from the Miracast to your HDTV, rather than plugging it directly into your HDTV's HDMI port. This is especially useful if your HDTV is mounted flush against the wall, or if the rear HDMI ports are difficult to reach.

Wirelessly display content from your smartphone, tablet, or Windows 8.1 laptop to your HDTV screen.
Play Games Made for Your Smartphone

Play games made for your smartphone directly on your HDTV with the Miracast Video Adapter. Your device acts as the controller, letting you enjoy the same fun gaming actions but with a better display. Ease eyestrain by viewing addictive smartphone games on a larger screen.

1080p resolution for full, rich HDTV picture.
High Resolution Provides Clear, Vibrant Picture

Graphics from your smartphone appear clear and vibrant on your HDTV screen, thanks to the Miracast Video Adapter's 1080p resolution. Enjoy a full, rich picture while you stream movies and TV shows, play games, or view a friend's photo album online.

A low profile keeps the adapter hidden from view.
Small Adapter Stays Out of Your Way

The Miracast Video Adapter has a low-profile design so it stays out of your way. Since it connects wirelessly, you won't have to worry about tripping over messy cables, and its small size makes it easy to transport between home and the office.

Plug it directly into your HDTV's HDMI port.
Plugs into HDMI Port for Easy Setup

Designed for easy setup, the Miracast Video Adapter connects to your HDTV's HDMI port and USB port (the adapter is powered via USB). Follow the quick installation guide, and you're ready to view smartphone content on your large HDTV screen without the hassle of software.

You can be forgiven for getting confused by all the new HDMI "dongle" appliances that seem to be coming onto the market. You have android platforms on a dongle. You have the Google Chromecast device. And you have several vendors offering "Miracast" devices. What's a poor boy to do?

Well, here's the quick shake out:

1) Most of the full android platform devices are for geeks only. A lot of them are underpowered, are difficult to interact with, etc. To be honest, I'd stay away from those, unless you know exactly what you're doing. And if you do, then you're not reading my review, anyway.

2) The Google Chromecast has probably received the most attention. It's nice, and allows you to stream a few content providers (Netflix, etc.) to your TV "out of the box". Recently, Google has loosened the reigns on the device and toolkit, and now more apps are getting supported. You can also stream whatever is in your Google Chrome browser from some platforms. The upside is that the device is cheap ($35 list). The downside is, I've found, that it doesn't always play nice with platforms like phones, and the built in wifi (how it communicates with your world) is mediocre. It also offered extremely limited functionality until recently, although, as noted, that's changing.

3) The Miracast video adaptor, such as the one being sold here under the Belkin name. This is basically a wireless TV adapter. If your device is capable of wireless broadcasting of video, then it transmits its signal to the Miracast, which then pushes that to your TV screen. IMHO, and in my experience, this is more useful than the more limited Chromecast dongle. However, it's also about twice as expensive.

In my hands, I find that the Belkin Miracast works very well.

8/20/2014 UPDATE:

Thanks to another reviewer and my personal confirmation, Miracast is standalone and DOES NOT require a home network to work. Meaning you can have no internet connection at home and be able to stream content from Android phone to the Belkin Miracast Dongle straight to your TV/Monitor.
I have personally confirmed this with these Android Smartphones:

Before Test I turned off my Home modem and made sure all internet connection was down. For some odd reason, your device may require to have WiFi set to ON in order to work.

-Sony Xperia Z (1st Gen)[Android Version 4.3]: Go to SETTINGS > Xperia Connectivity > Screen Mirroring > Turn on Scr.Mir. > Select Belkin Miracast.
-iNew i4000 [Android version 4.2.1]: Go To SETTINGS > under DEVICE select DISPLAY > Wireless Display > Turn ON > Select Belkin Miracast.
-Star Z2 [Android Version 4.2.2]: SETTINGS > Wireless Display > Turn ON > Select Belkin Miracast.

I bought this direct from the Belkin website - I travel a lot and have used this on five separate occasions since it arrived with different TV's and WiFi networks (hotels). Each time the unit pairs easily (with my Kindle Fire HDX) and starts to play the video with audio without a problem then it very quickly starts to heat up. After about 3 minutes it is very hot to the touch and the audio starts to break down and then cuts completely. After a couple of more minutes the unit feels like it is about to catch fire and the video just freezes on the TV. The Video and Audio are then kicked back to the Kindle and you are left with a frozen TV screen and a very, very hot little Belkin dongle. Now all this is fine, it is probably just a bad apple in the batch. Except that when I tried to replace the unit through the Belkin customer service I have just spent 50 minutes talking, repeating and on hold with three separate reps to a point where I have just told them to refund my money so I can get on with life. And the lesson is BUY FROM AMAZON. If it doesn't work they just replace without fuss, Amazon picks up the postage and you are back up and running in a couple of days. I usually always get everything through Amazon (mainly for the service) but the Belkin Miracast states 2 to 5 weeks delivery on Amazon so I thought just this once I'd go against my better judgment and order direct from Belkin. So how's that working for you? The one plus point is probably the color......

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Miracast adapter was super-easy to set up and start using. I plugged it in (it requires a free HDMI and either a USB port (or a USB plug) onthe TV. The instruction page came right up on the TV when I switched to the HDMI input, and I downloaded Miracast software from the Amazon store for my Kindle Fire HDX. All I had to do was hit the Kindle settings to share the screen with the adapter, pulled up a home video I'd recently shot using the Dropbox app, and started playing it. No stutters, no delay - the video and sound were perfect on the TV! I tried playing Candy Crush too, but I can't look at one screen and play on another. Great little tool for getting video onto your tv! (I just wish it worked for iPhone. I won't knock it down for that, though, it's still a 5-star tool.)
