I'm an electrical engineer - or at least I graduated in EE from OSU "back in the day" - and studied the basic impedance equations like the rest of the EEs. So, when I decided to try this splitter, my thought was, "it may be OK with up to two headphones, but it can't drive more than that without losing volume …" In fact, if you have two identical headphones plugged in, and none of them have their own amplification (many noise canceling headphones have their own power via battery and amplifier), then the volume should reduce when you plug in the second headphone. I tried plugging in four headphones into the Rockstar, and it did NOT reduce the volume appreciably. By the time the fourth phone was inserted, I expected the volume to be reduced by half or more, but it was really a very minimal difference. I didn't have instrumentation to measure this precisely, but I really only care about the perception when evaluating headphones, and the perception was very good. The various headphones and buds we plugged in all sounded good and the volume didn't reduce. I really don't understand how Belkin did such a good job with the Rockstar. Clearly, they paid some attention to doing some amount of impedance balancing to prevent deterioration of the sort I discuss above, but without some amplification, I don't understand how this could be as good as it is.

I had an iPhone 4s plugged in as the source. There were three 16 Ohm earbuds and a 16-ish Ohm over ear set plugged in t the Rockstar. All the headphones were able to produce reasonably good volume with very listenable distortion, etc. I plugged each earphone set both in and out while listening to music on one of the other earbuds. Although I could hear a slight increase in volume when one of the plugs was removed, it was far less than I had expected.

My conclusion is that this is a very well engineered product. Belkin should consider changing the insulation on the wires because it is too stiff.

This device is what it says it is - a splitter to let you plug five sets of headphones (or speaker pairs) into one jack.

Note what it cant do:

- adjust individual volumes. Different models and brands of headphones have different volume response. If you have a loud and a soft headphone plugged in at the same time, you won't be able to adjust them using this device.

- pass signals back to the player. This is a two-stripe plug not a three-stripe plug. Your inline player remote won't work.

- amplify the signal. There is a very slight but noticeable drop off in volume as more jacks are plugged in. Not by itself a deal breaker, just a heads up. (Fortunately, human perception of "loudness" is logarhythmic, so the drop-off isn't linear, and some players do compensate for increased resistance).

For my needs (movie sharing on trips) this device is suitable. YMMV.

The Belkin Headphone Splitter is fabulous. It is very strong and well made. It should last for a long time.

I tested it with a iPhone 6 and plugged in 5 headphones (earbuds and over the ear headphones) and I was totally surprise how little of a sound drop off there was when I plugged each one in. Sometimes I could not even tell when another one was plugged in. After several combinations of plugging different types of heads[hones in and being satisfied I tried plugging in a second device (Samsung Galaxy S6). I was awesome you could hear both musics playing at the same time. It was fun combining 2 music styles and being able to turn each device up or down. No sound drop off with 2 devices and 4 sets of earphones plugged in. It is worth the few extra dollars to get a splitter that works so great.

Tested with the following devices and worked great:
Samsung Galaxy S6
Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy S4
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPods (older and newer ones)

Highly Recommend!!!!

Works very well. Tried it with 4 headphones at once and they all sounded good. The volume is slightly less than when the headphones are plugged directly into the phone but still plenty of volume. It works with my iPhone 5S (an issue with my old headphone splitter). The microphone/control on the iPhone earbuds do not work when using this. Also comes with a 2ft aux cable that would work to plug a speaker or something from the splitter - it does not extend the connection into the splitter. The aux cable has two male ends. See picture - the splitter is smaller than a post-it note.

We all have ipods and tablets and the like even some portable DVD players and Computers each with a sound socket. But problem is often you have to do the traditional "Headphone" sharing to show something to someone on each of these devices in the scenario's of the sound on the external speaker Is low quality or so as to not disturb others with sound. This jack allows you to A) no longer have to "share" headphones rather each person just brings their own and B) you can split the sound with up to 5 sockets making it perfect for sharing with 4 other people you want to (though this is not practical if its an ipod or small device cause it tethers all the individuals to it so could lead to some awkward instances of pulling on each others headphones (also depending on length))

Overall its a handy device for sharing all the things on your multimedia devices with up to 4 people and is a great accessory for anyone who enjoys music, movies and more.
