so once you get the product drivers compatible with your 64 bit os if applicable this piece is great. using it to hook my laptop up to my celestron 6se. but upon getting it in the mail (which i got in 2 days instead of the 5-7 days shipping i paid for :D) it becomes appearer that they ship it with a CD with drivers up to XP. which you would want to go to belkins page but then find out neither belkin nor windows has any driver support for vista or 7 in the 64 bit editions. enter in a small Google search and you will hopefully find out that belkin doesn't make its drivers and a group called Magic Control Technologies makes them. to save you time go google search for "Belkin F5U409 USB to Serial Converter in 64bit Windows 7/Vista/Mac OSX 10" and you should find a page on a website called clearchain that will explain everything and give out a download link for it (use the local download mirror) after the install i rebooted and plugged in the cable and windows did a small check and told me it was installed correctly, even if windows tried to say it did it and steal all the glory XD. your welcome and happy connecting :D haha

First, this is a Belkin FSU407-CU, not a FSU409V1 as stated in the tech specs. Amazon should correct this. Anyway, when I received the adapter, I tried to install it on my new Win 7 64 bit laptop and the driver supplied did not work. I researched the web and kept getting responses that said there were no Win 7 32 or 64 bit drivers for this adapter, not even Vista drivers. More research however turned up this website - [...] Copy and paste this into your browser and you will find a link to a downloadable driver from the Magic Control Technologies site. Download and install their U232-P9 driver package and after restarting your computer the darned thing will finally recognize the adapter and configure a driver for it! Haven't used the adapter yet but I'll bet it works fine.

I use this adapter on the job, primarily communicating with electronic equipment. Most new laptops do not come equipped with Serial Ports, so a USB to Serial Adapter is necessary.

I would rate this USB to Serial adapter with 4.5 Stars, but the system restricted me to whole stars, so I went with 4. It is nearly perfect, and I haven't had any issues with it (especially compared to my previous Radio Shack adapter, where I was continually reloading the drivers). A friend showed me his USB to Serial that has an external power supply, and that will be my next aquisition.

This USB adapter works well. I plugged it into my computer and the driver installed automatically -- without having to use the supplied CD rom disk. I've used many different Prolific USB to serial adapters, and this one seems to be the most reliable. So far I've used it about 10 times for three different applications and it still works.

Using these at work to connect to Thales payshield 9000 HSMs.
The payshield's management cables still use serial port on the laptop side, haven't seen a laptop with a serial port in a lot of years.
You plug the usb of this cable into your laptop. Plug the serial end into the serial end of the Thales management cable then the USB of the Thales cable into the Payshield. Other usb to serial converters don't work with the Payshield cable.
