The problem with it not being universal comes from this little "nub" that is on the transmitter. The older iPod has a connection hole for this, the newer ones (including iPad, iPod Touch, and iPod Nano - all of which I personally own) don't have it, rendering the transmitter useless on these models. The other problem is compatibility with other transmitters. I do have a Bluetooth transmitter that I used on my older iPod Touch. I tried using it with the Belkin receiver - it syched, but no go on actually working and transmitting sound.
There is a reason the price is so low on this model, I believe few people own (or still use) that older iPod model. However for the money, it was perfect and I used it for an end-of-school performance. It performed perfectly. I was able to keep the iPod in my pocket and emcee the show without having to run back and forth to turn music on and off. I will use it in my classroom during the upcoming school year as well - I will just need to keep my older iPod charged daily and run it with this Belkin transmitter and receiver.
If you have the right version iPod, this is an absolutely wonderful product which does exactly what it's supposed to do. The TuneStage transmitter is a standard Bluetooth A2DP audio transmitter and the TuneStage receiver is a standard Bluetooth A2DP audio receiver, so they do have substantial (but NOT guaranteed) interoperability with other Bluetooth accessories.
