Card has worse reception than laptop built-in WiFi

I bought this card to replace a Belkin card of same model that died in my laptop. I thought I needed new card, until I tried built-in Laptop WiFi during same day that I ordered the card. The built-in WiFi actually improved the signal reception between the laptop and the router over what I had experienced with the old Belkin card. The Amazon, vendor, Digitalet, is good, and provided a credit after I returned the Belkin card (un-opened) and documentation. The price for the card was good also, but the card apparently is not good because my built-in WiFi had noticably better reception than card, and still allowed me to connect through router and USB hub to the printer for printing. Recommend using your built-in WiFi (N Standard) rather than buy and use the card.

Good Expresscard Wireless Option

The internal wi-fi on my laptop was acting badly and I could not seem to find any software settings to make the problem disappear. I eventually concluded that it was a hardware and not a software issue and purchased a cheap ($10) USB wi-fi adapter at a local store. That adapter worked beautifully and my problems were solved, until I was taking the laptop thru a doorway and whacked the adapter on a doorjamb (despite bending the adapter I did not break it and the unit still works fine). As a result I wanted to find a lower-profile (better form factor) adapter.
My laptop has an Expresscard slot, which, sitting unused, looked like a great place to put a wi-fi adapter. Finding a reasonably-priced (and decently-performing) Expresscard wi-fi adapter was a challenge. I finally found the Belkin N1 and decided in spite of the poor reviews to try one (at more than double the cost of the USB adapter I was using...).
When I got the unit I decided to try the "win the lottery" approach and simply slipped the card into the slot on the computer(dual-core Intel processor laptop running Windows 7). The card didn't install. Then I tried the approach in another review where the person downloaded Ralink drivers. Downloaded the software (Ralink must be on a dial-up connection, it took forever to download the file), installed the drivers, slipped in the card...and still no successful installation. I looked on the Belkin site and there appeared to be no software update available for the card. I didn't try the software CD `cause the box had an insert saying that the unit wouldn't work with Vista (not encouraging). Finally I did a Google search and found this Belkin site:

and installed the software. I slipped in the card (when the software indicated to do so) and it powered right up and I was connected in seconds.
I've been using the card for a couple days and initial impression is that the card does the job in that it connects and maintains a connection. As far as signal strength, it's about at the same level as the internal laptop wi-fi was, meaning average and adequate (not bad but not great either). The card also has a lower profile/better form factor than the USB adapter I was using, and does open a USB port for other uses.
So far this appears to be a decent unit; I'll see how things go over time. Right now I am giving it four stars rather than five simply because the unit did not work "out of the box" and I had to go on a fishing expedition to find the correct software/drivers (Belkin site really badly set up), while the less-expensive USB solution I had not only installed effortlessly but also worked better. If you have a USB slot to spare, use a USB adapter as a cheaper alternative; I have since found that there are low-profile/better form factor USB adapters out there.

Customer service is horrible

This turned out to not fit the computer I bought it for. So I contacted the company to see about returning it. They said they could only do that if the package was unopened. So I asked them how I was supposed to find out it didn't fit without opening the package. This is a wifi card, not a game or something that I could copy. So after I leave a bad review I suddenly have a return code in my e-mail from them. Now it has been nearly a month since I returned the item. They still have not returned my money, or given me a credit, sent me an e-mail, I have not heard from them at all. I will never shop with Digitalet again.

Just to update, I did finally get my refund. But I had to get Amazon involved. They reviewed the case and all of our messages and found that I was in fact owed a refund. Amazon refunded me, I have no idea what happened to the company beyond that.

Works perfectly

I had to buy a new wireless Express Card for my wife's laptop when she accidently dropped it and broke the original card. After contacting the manufacturer and finding out what a replacement card would cost, I decided to look elsewhere. Since this technology is kind of on the old side, finding a suitable replacement was not that easy. However, the Belkin does the job nicely. I only needed the G wireless capabilities, but this card can handle the newer and faster N wireless routers. Which is really nice to know if I ever decide to upgrade one day.

This card does what it is supposed to do. Once I loaded up the drivers, I just plugged it into its slot. I am running Windows XP which found the card right away and it was just plug and play. I was reconnected to my home network in a matter of a minute and my wife was browsing the web once again. She was happy, which means I was happy. The best part is the Belkin Wireless Express Card cost me half as much as the original manufacturer wanted as a replacement.

Piece of cake with Vista...

We have an HP dv6000 laptop with vista Home Premium that had the typical wireless card malfunction that you see all over the internet... More hassle than its worth to replace if yours is out of warranty which ours was.
This was a perfect option for us. Didn't plug up one of our USB ports, we never use the expresscard slot anyway, and it has a fairly low profile when used. Much less than a USB antenna anyway.
I am pretty tech savvy, but I don't think it was necessary in the least. Follow the directions that come in the box, and you should be up and running in 15 minutes.
Functionality is great; our b/g router handles it just fine, and we are able to pick up wireless points when we travel also.
Buy with confidence.
