To be sure, the puncture was fairly extreme...it was ragged, with 2 small "tears" each about 1/16th of an inch. Also, this was near a juncture of 2 of those raised ribs that come about during the manufacturing process. But still, the site was well buffed, and the patch itself seemed to adhere well.
This patch kit may suffice for a small, well-defined puncture on a smooth part of the tube, but otherwise, it's a roll of the dice. You really can't choose what kind of flat you will get, so I can't recommend carrying this kit.
As an aside, the wrench is no longer included with the kit (it's not listed on the kit package labeling). The tire levers are EXCELLENT, and they nest together, so I'll be keeping them. I have a seat bag, and carry an extra tube, and have ordered a patch kit which uses glue.
To prep the tire, I usually use a piece of small sand paper (the scuff plate works fine, but I prefer sand paper). Make sure the tire is dry and clean after sanding flat. I then add a small amount of air to the tube to mimic the size of the tube when its in the tire (not necessary, but I figure this helps the patch not ripple and leak). After, I add the patch, sealing the hole.
To ensure I don't get repeat flats, I check the tire religiously for the source of the puncture. Usually, its a piece of metal wire or burr that remains in the tire. It takes a very keen eye to find the problem (sometime you need to run your nail around the tire to find it or realign your tube where the puncture was). This is what I'm guessing some people struggle with. If you don't remove the source, as you refill your tire, the tube will re-puncture where the source was and you have the same issue you started with.
Its not the product at fault, more likely the people doing the install. Be careful and you shouldn't have any issues. It is less messy than glue on patches and work just as well. I use these on my 700x23c road tubes at 130 psi, so they definitely hold up fine.
These are cheaper in the store that I went to, so might be a consideration.
A proper patch is all in the prep and making sure you remove the source that caused the flat (usually for me, its a small fragment of metal wire that embeds itself in the tire. Removing this solves the problem of repeat flats.
