When I was doing research on helmets and reading reviews since this was going to be my first helmet, I read a lot about wind noise. I've gone 135mph and wind noise was the last thing I was worried about when going that fast, and even then it wasn't unbearable like a lot of other reviews I've seen. Going normal highway speeds, I specifically had to THINK(because I wanted to write this review) about the wind noise to notice it.
The helmet feels well balanced on my head at all speeds, and is really comfortable to wear.
The field of view is great, and I don't feel like my peripherals are restricted.
Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase, and the helmet is well worth the money spent, which makes me think how can the higher priced helmets really get much better than this? I'll know when I'm ready to drop >$400 on a helmet, but for now this helmet will do.
Helmet is light, fits well, very little or no buffeting at high speed (75+) so the aerodynamics seem to be dialed in well. I can't tell if there is wind noise because my bike has straight pipes and is very loud by itself. There is a lot of space around the ears inside the helmet to allow for speakers, so I don't feel that there is much sound deadening. This could be positive or negative depending on your perspective, for a guy with a loud bike like mine, I wish it was a bit quieter in there.
If I had to complain, the shell seems to be a bit on the large side, thought not comically large. There is also a significant gap between my chin, and the helmet chin, meaning that there is a lot of airflow over my face, even with the vents closed. This is probably going to be great in the hotter months, but this early in spring, it felt a bit cool. I hope Bell releases some sort of clip on chin piece/breath box for the qualifier to reduce this, otherwise you'll want a balaclava or other wind protection on cool days.
As for the person who complained about the lack of tinted shield, they said themselves that all other helmets show tinted, but come with clear. I'm unsure why they assumed this helmet would be different. I bought the dark smoke visor separately and it looks great with the matte black. For the price, I think this is a great helmet. The looks, especially with the *optional* dark smoke shield, are great, and the build quality and materials seem to be fantastic for an entry level helmet.
I hope I never have to test the durability of course. Visibility wise, I think its quite good; I think its the way I wear it but the top is just a tad down, not covering my visibility but enough to get the sun out of the way in the morning.
Wind noise wise, of course you can't expect 100% isolation, its a helmet, if you wanted that you'd be in a car. That said, its really quiet, I think I'm having a problem with it, one side is whistling at 55 mph+ while the other side isn't at all, I turn my head and its fine but no one wants to have their head turned while on their bike of course :P
It's the only reason I knocked off one star.
After some testing, I'm bumping it to 5 stars, It turns out the whistle I get is entirely from my bluetooth attachment, I moved it a bit more back, so its now covering the BELL logo. It was previously in front of it. It's now just as quiet on both sides.
Decent closable ventilation on top and in front. Does fog up a bit when not moving, so I sometimes lift visor when sitting at a light.
