Amazon.com

The Bell Solar Bike Helmet is constructed with a fusion in-mold microshell, which utilizes the process of bonding the helmet's microshell to its EPS foam layer, rather than forming the two separately and taping them together later, to provide a sturdier, more solid helmet. This helmet features Bell's ErgoDial fit system to deliver an easy one-hand adjustment with the press of a button and slide of the dial for a firm, snug and comfortable stability.

The Solar also features cam-lock levers that make it easy to adjust the straps around your ears. For your comfort, this bicycle helmet includes 23 vents that allow cool, fresh air in and warm air out. The Solar helmet comes in Bell's Universal Adult size (54-61cm), weighs 252 grams, and complies with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets.

As an avid cyclist and racer for 30-plus years, I've long since outgrown the need to be seen using the latest gear endorsed by Lance or Alberto or Andy. Let's face it: A big reason for the high cost of many cycling accessories is marketing and sponsorships. Products like helmets are little more than commodities, so manufacturers have to differentiate their high-end brain buckets by paying big-name riders to wear them.

Helmet technology has evolved to the point where there's little functional difference between entry-level models and the top of the line ones. They all consist of a shell, nylon webbing and some EPS foam. And while the more costly units may carry stickers signifying compliance with multiple certification standards (Snell, ASTM, CPSC, etc.), keep in mind that manufacturers are obligated to pay for the costs of testing along with (in many cases) royalty fees that grant them the privilege of applying the stickers of certain privately-funded safety foundations. A given helmet may well comply with the latest Snell standard, but unless the manufacturer pays Snell's fees, they can't say it does.

So that brings us to the Bell Solar. I've worn many Bell helmets (and crashed a few) over the years and have never found their protection to be lacking in any area. I originally bought a Solar as the first adult-sized helmet for my still-growing daughter, so I didn't want to spend too much on one that might well end up being replaced in a year. Once it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the adjustable-fit system would accommodate even my 60cm melon, and it was a couple ounces lighter than the dated Giro I'd been using. So I bought another one for myself.

I didn't read all the previous reviews but most discussed the fit. This helmet fit fine for me as well, but more importantly it works. I had a pretty bad accident with bone breaks (collar bone, multiple ribs)requiring surgery and felt a solid head thump on concrete. The helmet compressed and cracked but I had absolutely no head injury. Without a helmet I expect they would have had to wake me up!

I didn't have great confidence in the "universal fit" system - until I tried it. I have owned higher end helmets from Bell and Giro, and this fits as well as any I've owned. I can't see spending $100 for a helmet when this Bell does as well for a third of that.

I never wore a bike helmet but I recently got into mountain biking and decided it'd be a good idea to start wearing one. I only planned on wearing it on the mountain biking trails so I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on something I wasn't going to use every time I got on my bike. This helmet was a decent price, seemed fairly light and fit well after making the adjustments. While riding the rough trails I never had a problem with the helmet and often forgot I was even wearing it.

Last night I went back up on the trails and did my usual loop but we had gotten rain the night before so they were a little slick. Well, I didn't take it easy and came flying down a hill and my front tire slid on a tree root and jacked it to the side. Before I could do anything I flew over the handle bars head first into a tree. After lying there for a few minutes trying to figure out what just happened I took the helmet off and saw a 3"x3" chunk taken out of it and had a pretty large crack half way up. My neck and shoulder are a little sore but my head feels fine because the helmet absorbed most of the impact. So, if you're looking for a reasonably priced helmet that'll give you the protection you're looking for, I'd definitely recommend this one. I already bought my second one!

After many helmets that wobbled back and forth on my head, this helmet has a racketing device in the headliner to tighten up the fit. It stays where I put it and protects my head.

In my view the built-in mounting front and rear for tiny but super-bright Blackburn flea lamps are the main reason to choose this helmet. If you are ever likely to end up cycling at night pay the extra for them! I have used a helmet fitted with said lamps for two years. They are useful as back-up riding lamps but also functional as main lamps at a pinch. The front light is great as a headlamp when fixing a flat or putting the bike away in the garage at night. My helmet remains comfortable summer and winter. It was fluorescent green but has now faded to a greenish white, no doubt due to the effects of UV, which is odd as I live in Kent, England not the Sahara desert! Thus, 4 stars.

The helmet fits nicely. I like the adjustment and it fits my head well.
Rode 2400 miles with this helmet this year including an Ironman. No complaints.
Update-Thanks to a random act of (crazy) dog, went over to top of the handlebars yesterday. Landed on the road and broke the helmet in 9 places with my head.
Helmet did a great job. It's gone but I'm still here.

Purchased the Bell Solar Bike Helmet and it fit comfortably. Easy to adjust once I figured out how the straps worked. Recommend this product and company to anyone interested in buying a good reasonably priced helmet.
