The cabinet itself looks great. The description, however is misleading. Bell'O states that it is made from "hardwood solids covered with a hand rubbed Deep European Brown veneer finish". They should clarify that this only pertains to the doors. The rest of the piece is indeed made from particle board. In fact, quality-wise, the piece is constructed exactly the same as something you might find at Walmart for $150.
Honestly, none of this was surprising to me since this is usually all you can get in the sub-$1000 price range. But I paid the premium simply because there aren't many units that are wide enough to accommodate our television. So taking price and overall quality into consideration, it is a 3-star product. Over-priced for what it is but will serve the purpose if it arrives undamaged.
And that brings me to my warning. I don't know if this will apply to others, but this is how my local UPS handled the situation. I received a call a few days ago from the local UPS depot telling me the package was too heavy to deliver to my home. Well, my only question is why in the heck did you pick up the package in the first place?!?! So I had to drive down to UPS to pick the item up. I won't even get into the awkwardness of the situation when I showed up alone and they were very reluctant to help me load it into my truck. Legal issues I guess.
The package was damaged, but I hoped for the best. The awkwardness of the pickup simply didn't allow for proper inspection of the piece before taking it home. Once opened, I was greeted with a broken door and a piece of the side (toward the back) was ripped off. So now I have some beautiful particle board staring back at me on the left side.
I called Amazon and I had a few choices. Either return it for a refund, return it for an exchange, or keep the unit at a discount. Since the first two options would involve me trying to repackage this thing, I immediately ruled those out. I took the $120 discount. Thankfully, as a woodworker I can repair these issues so they are at least "passable". But these are not average homeowner repairs. And since this is just a temporary replacement, I am not too concerned about the long-term with this piece. But if I were buying this as our end all be all entertainment center, the condition of this piece would be unacceptable.
Again, this shipping fiasco is NOT reflected in my review, because it drives me nuts when people do that. :) I hope that anyone who orders this product is actually able to have it delivered properly. And when it arrives, I hope it is in better condition than mine was.
I expected it to last a while. The stand itself looks great coming out of the box. Great looking black glass on top, nice color finish, very modern, but not over the top. However, try moving this thing a few inches and it completely feel apart. This thing is actually glued together, not screwed, not nailed, GLUED. it holds particle board to particle board with Glue, more glue and I can't believe they got away with it.. The covering is paper! It is just an atrocious piece of furniture. I now have this crooked embarrassment staring at me and reminding my wife what an idiot I am for overpaying for this low quality cheap piece of particle board garbage. I'm furious to say the least. I had the Metal/Glass Bell'O stands before and I thought I was getting a great piece with this. The big box retailer had this stand on display in their theater room for $1000. Getting it for $600 seemed reasonable, but I wouldn't of paid $100 for it.
This sucker is heavy, how could they just use glue. STAY AWAY. If I could give it negative stars, I would.
What I don't like is that legs don't have any sort of adjustment feature for leveling and the center compartment is very tight to fit a high quality center channel. My Monitor Audio RS-LCR barely fits. It would be nice if this unit was easier to move around after it was loaded. I have it on a hardwood floor and the legs scratch it. I suppose some felt pads would have been a good idea to put on there.
I got this for a great price, a lot less than what it usually sells for. I don't think this is worth more than $500. I can see why some of the other reviewers would be disappointed.
