Most of our baking is gluten-free, and with simple GF flour substitutions in the basic recipes, I get soft, cakey donuts, which my son and his friends find quite satisfactory. I like that I can be done with the whole project - batter to bake to frost - in about 20 minutes. Much easier than making fried donuts in hot oil, which makes a mess out of the whole kitchen.
My negative about this product would be the "glaze" recipes - they're wet, drippy and sticky, not what you want on finger food. Try either tossing the hot donuts in cinnamon sugar or making a simple chocolate frosting with melted semi-sweet chocolate, a dab of butter and 1 tsp. milk. That worked great.
If you can follow directions, this is a great product. You have to read carefully, or you will not fill the donut maker correctly and wind up with donuts that are overcooked on the bottom and raw on the top.
The reason the tops are coming out white on some peoples is because the did not fill them enough. If the batter dose not rise to the top it can not brown. There are instructional videos on YouTube that let you know exactly what you need to do.
We love it and cant wait to make more :)
--follow recipe for basic doughnuts that comes with machine but I've successfully substituted honey/maple syrup for the sugar.
--for chocolate doughnuts, swap 1/4 cup flour for cocoa
--don't worry about glopping batter on the 'hole' part of the griddle, it will be thin and can easily be poked through. In fact, you don't want to waste time trying to navigate around the doughnut center, just spoon your batter in there fast and move on!
--use a wooden chopstick to pull the doughnut from the griddle. If you pick up the doughnut from the hole, you'll poke out the center bit and have a perfect doughnut! Seriously--wooden chopstick is really the way to go. Once I switched to this method I moved much faster and doughnuts had a perfect center. This makes the difference between slightly tedious process and super-fast production!
--I like to use a glaze of melted chocolate with a spoonful of powdered sugar and a couple spoonfuls of cream. I use a double boiler and it's really not that much effort.
--great topics include chopped nuts, powdered sugar, sprinkles, sugar/cinnamon mixture, chopped white chocolate.
--Always make a double batch bc they freeze so well.
1. Read the instructions provided in the box and apply them.
In the instructions they strongly suggest to throw the first two batchs you will cook with the machine because they will taste funny. I did taste them anyway and the instructions are right... The first batch have a tiny funny taste but the next ones will be ok. Also make sure to wash it before you use it.
2. FOR GOOD DONUT TASTE
The recipe provided with the machine is total crap, it taste like pancake, smell like pancake, and look like pancake. Go on the web and look for "Donut Muffin" recipe or use any cake recipe you want but PLEASE dont use the recipe provided with this machine.
3. FOR DONUTS WITH CENTER HOLE
Many complaints here about the donuts not having real holes. Mines are perfect. Be sure to have the perfect batter texture and make sure to fill each mould as much as you can but dont overfill them, it should not cover the part that give the hole shape to the donut.
4. POUR THE BATTER WITH A PASTRY BAG
Filling each moulds with a spoon is not the right technique. It will drive you crazy. Use a pastry bag, if you dont have one use a ziplock bag and cut one of the lower corner.
5. FOR EASY UNMOULDING DONUTS.
Put some vegetable oil on the moulds and whipe the excess with a paper towel. The moulds are not made of good quality anti adhesive, they are ok but treating them with vegetable oil will help a lot.
Bottom line. Good machine when use right. Fair price, mine was 20.00 at Target.
