While the problem of corrupt Germans, corrupt Frenchmen, the ongoing war, and the idea that the end is coming are all part of the story, Janes has too many voices speaking here. Not just the two detectives but the hunted suspect and several other characters telll us part of the story leading to some confusion on the reader's part.
This story takes place in October 1943, about ten months after its predecessor. Clearly Janes is rushing ahead to the end of the war. All of the other novels took place during the fall and winter of 1942-43. Janes says he is working on a seventeenth novel in the series. When will it take place?
