( S.Suzuki,Beck,Maezumi etc ) combined with a rigour that comes from teaching in the uncompromising dojos of Europe for so many years.
Philippe Coupey likes very much the famous Zen story of the guy who likes to cut out dragons, paper dragons - one day a real dragon heard about this and decided to pay him a visit, thinking he'd be pleased - he went WAAHH! Jumped up with fear and ran out of his hut. Well, Rei Ryu's Zen is the real dragon!
Gleaned from kusen talks to his students he brings alive some of the flavour of serious practice without intimidating the reader with scriptural reference; I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to someone who's had a little taste of Zen and wants to deepen their pratice by being guided, but also, by finding out for themselves.
A book that urges, like the most creative work American Zen, contemporary pratictioners to observe the tradition whilst finding a language and an experience authentically their own and true to their roots in modern life. Coupey's book is brave and brilliant and constantly encourages us to do this.
Oh, and Sosan isn't bad either!
