It is almost Valentine’s Day and Emily and the guys get a call about a missing diamond necklace. No problem. Meet Royalty. Welcome back two of the guys who have been away on business. Find the necklace and nab the culprit. Celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Except nothing about the case is as it seems.
Skye MacKinnon gives us a racy novella with Beloved Heart (9781793927248, 2019), a spin-off of the first novel Abandoned Hearts in her “Defiance” series. It all starts with a red bow for Valentine’s Day and it ends with a red bow. One cannot ask for more to celebrate this holiday with (laugh - today is Valentine’s Day).
There is a mystery, a red herring, Royalty, and a very “hot” welcoming home party for Emily’s men. MacKinnon ends up giving us the gift for the Valentine’s with Beloved Heart.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Thanks to Skye MacKinnon for the complimentary eARC. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.
This is the perfect latte of a book – hot, steamy, sweet, and frothy, but not meant to be a solid meal!
The mystery that acts as the MacGuffin to get things moving is wrapped up in a matter of paragraphs and most readers will have solved it.
The sex scenes are interesting, lengthy and sizzling. They are also the only reason to read this story.
Ms. MacKinnon says that this can be read as a stand-alone. That's how I came to it. Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about the characters, because they really aren't going to be fleshed out in something this short.
All in all, for a fun short read with hot males and their love, this is a good go. Anything deeper? Skip the latte.
4 stars out of 5
Right from the first page, this book heats up and I got a kick out of Emily's reaction to Luther's get-up. Although it was also a bit rude of him to dress that way and tell her she had to get up when she really needed more sleep.
He does make it up to her in a very chocolatey way.
As Luther and Emily begin the investigation at Balmoral, Ben and Alistair head to Aberdeen to check out the train.
Plenty of twists in this one and I think my kindle started melting in my hand with the heat coming off the pages with these four.
Looks like the other two books in the Defiant series will be on my TBR pile shortly.
