Ben is a wonderful album by the great Michael Jackson. I have always liked Michael's work when he was young; and this CD certainly has much for his fans and even newcomers to enjoy here. We also hear great backup on Michael's songs performed by other members of Michael's family. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very well done.

"Ben," the title track, starts off the album with Michael Jackson singing so passionately; he truly displays a talent far beyond his years. His phrasing and his excellent diction enhance his performance all the more; and the rest of the Jacksons also do a sublime job--great! The melody is poignant even all by itself and "Ben" is a total masterpiece by Michael and the others. "The Greatest Show on Earth" has an incredible melody and Michael Jackson's squarely front and center, which is quite all right by me! Michael sings this with panache and I love every minute of it. "The Greatest Show on Earth" also benefits from that awesome musical arrangement; the percussion is well used as are the other instruments.

"People Make the World Go Around" is another emotional song that gets the royal treatment from Michael and the rest; this is another highlight of this album and that's grand. Michael handles complex tempo and key changes like the pro he was and always will be--just one listen proves it! In addition, there's another gem in "We've Got a Good Thing Going;" Michael sings this with all his heart ands soul. He never lets go of a superfluous note and I'm very impressed with the way they all do this number. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" shines brighter than silver and gold when Michael delivers it even if the lyrics aren't all that happy; and the rest of Michael's family harmonize to perfection--and beyond! Perfect!

This album in my opinion is Michael's best solo album as a kid and with Motown. Every song is great. The track "In Our Small Way" is also featured on his debut album: "Got to Be There".

Favorite Tracks:
"Ben" (favorite track on the album, of course)
"People Make the World Go 'Round"
"My Girl"
"You Can Cry on My Shoulder"

I received a great deal on an item that is hard to obtain. It is also something that many would want at this particular time. I consider myself to be fortunate.

How can a recording of MJ not receive a 5-star?

Ben... a childhood favorite recorded on casette tape...
And now, I can listen to it in its original album.

Sweet little Michael.... Precious and sweet in all stages of his life. His music bringing us joy and enchantment even from so early on... A prodigy, a phenomenon to come once ever, period.

During 1972 Michael Jackson found himself in the possition that Stevie Wonder did in the mid 60's:his voice was beginning to change. However this posed potential difficulties for young Mike. When he first arrived at Motown, people were amazed that he could sing with such expression, timbre and vocal range with that was essentially still a baby voice. Would it all be wasted on an inadequete adult voice? As we know that never actually happened. But Motown wanted to make sure there was as much of his music available before that happened, just to be on the safe side. Of course during this session his voice was already changing in tone significantly. But not enough to diminish something else starting to happen.

While his debut Got to Be There earlier in the year was excellent this particular album found a great deal of musical growth as well. The acoustic title song is a very poignant song of friendship, honest as much as from a teenagers point of view and also probably the first showcase for his adult voice on the refrains. Many of the songs here such as "We've Got A Good Thing Going","Everybody's Somebody's Fool","What Goes Aroun Comes Around","You Can Cry On My Shoulder" and "In Our Small Way" reflect not only the poppier side of 70's Motown but some of the lyrics take on somewhat reflective adult themes that are very mortal. Where "The Greatest Show On Earth" had this very densley written pop approach. And there's the impression the singer is very aware at this point what he's singing about.
