I'm a medical student, so I spend an inhuman amount of time reading from my computer. I recently got a check up by my eye doc and she noted I'm having slight nearsighted vision (+0.25, so nothing major)...but compared to the 20/17 vision I used to have, this was pretty shocking news for me. I felt eye strain and headaches at the end of long studying days and decided to look into an external monitor for my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina that had a low blue light setting to help relieve eye strain.
Long story short: this monitor is thin, light, and is constructed extremely well. It's sleek and looks very clean with my extremely fastidious/tidy desk up. Resolution and color richness is fantastic (I connect to my MBP via HDMI). I mounted it on an extendable arm which is mounted to my desk (see pictures). Set up is a breeze (automatic, basically) and adjusting the screen settings couldn't be easier. I do, actually, feel less strain in my eyes after reading from this monitor for long periods of time (4-14hrs per day). Honestly, for under $150, this is absolutely ridiculous. I did consider some of ViewSonic's low blue light and flicker free monitors, but they were a bit more expensive, and I was curious to try a newer company like BenQ who was cranking out awesome technology for low cost (because for what it costs to make these monitors, there's no valid reason to charge $300+ for a 21.5'' monitor).
All in all, I'm extremely pleased and beyond impressed with this purchase. Well done BenQ. If you have any doubts or questions, I'll be happy to answer them. I also took too much time out of studying to write this, so I hope it's worth it to you.
My GF wanted a second monitor that would fit on her desk in portrait mode for reading. Very glad I went with this.
Perks: No dead pixels.
Good color out of the box. (I'm still going to calibrate at some point but I'm a nerd like that)
Works great with a male HDMI to male DVI cable.
Quirks: Only has DVI and VGA inputs.
Has that good old ugly purple BENQ splash screen every time you power it on. (BENQ pls stahp)
Other: Settings interface is bearable. Buttons are clicky and responsive. Power LED is amber when idle and green when on. Brightness comes at 100%, so be prepared to take it down to about 35. Hastag typical monitor problems.
For the price, it's an excellent monitor. I use it as a second monitor for my MacBook Pro. The color temperature of the monitor out of the box was a bit different from my MacBook Pro's screen but fortunately, there are manual adjustments to dial in the color temperature to match.
The contrast is excellent, brightness quite good, the colors vibrant, resolution excellent, and on-screen characters crisp, clean, and easy to read (I'm using the HDMI interface).
Now, I'm kind of wishing my MacBook Pro supported more than two monitors. If it did I would purchase another BenQ GW Series GW2265HM 21.5" monitor as I truly like this monitor.
