Honestly, I can't believe that BenQ released something with such a serious flaw, and wish we had known this before purchasing our projector. Tech support suggested that we purchase additional hardware to compensate for their engineering oversight. I guess this projector should not be considered as a stand-alone piece of equipment if you actually want to hear your movies/games.
At first I was looking at one of the Epson projectors because I was really worried about the DLP and the rainbow effect I have read about. We are using it in a room with some windows though and this one had a higher brightness rating on it. I also figured I could just send it back if the rainbow thing was an issue. No one in our family has noticed any rainbow effects and we have watched several different kinds of movies and shows.
I was also looking at getting the Optoma HD143X because it was the same price point and had a lot of good reviews. I went with this one because I like the brand name and the fan was rated as quieter. I don't know what the Optoma's fan is like, but this one is incredibly quiet. We don't have it mounted on the ceiling yet so we are sitting right next to it and you can't even hear the fan going at all. I think it looks nicer than the Optoma one too.
The only possible downside is the speakers on this one are really quiet. I mean even at full volume and right next to it, you can hardly hear it. They are almost as quiet as the fan. But we have a separate speaker system hooked up so that wasn't one of the things we were looking for anyway.
Several nice features:
It can project from behind a screen (flips the picture sideways). We don't plan on using this, but it was a cool feature I didn't know it could do.
It can project upside down for when we mount it on the ceiling.
It automagically switches between inputs based on which one is turned on and showing a picture. This was an unexpectedly nice feature because we have several items hooked up to it and the projector just switches inputs on its own to whichever one we turn on.
It also automatically adjusts the screen size to match what is being shown (4:3, 16:9, etc).
The zoom is really helpful. We have a 100 inch screen and as long as this projector is within a foot or so of the 11 foot distance sweet spot for that size, you can just zoom to make the picture bigger or smaller to match the screen size. It doesn't change the picture quality or the focus at all. It just changes the size of the picture. That is going to be really helpful for mounting it because I am sure we won't get it in the exact right place down to the inch. So the zoom can make up for that.
The eco bulb mode is really bright. We have used this day or night and we just leave it on the eco mode and it has been great.
There isn't a lens cover. But I didn't want one.
Did I mention the picture quality? It is amazing. I'm no videophile, but at night on a decent screen, this thing really looks as good as a regular TV. I am sure the more expensive projectors are somehow better, but I don't see how, and whatever small difference they might have couldn't justify the huge price difference to me.
Pros:
Very Very sharp and great picture. 1080p seems legit.
Bright - I was worried about lumens at first as this was my first projector. The 3300 was plenty bright. For Outdoor movies, at dusk light, it looked great.
Menu Interface - It was very easy to navigate and set up the settings I wanted. Make sure to change the default picture from presentation to cinema mode for movies.
Cons:
Rainbow Effect - I did notice rainbow effect for some movies while others were just fine. I need to do some more investigation here. Not a huge mark down however as i only noticed it with one movie (Rogue One via Amazon Fire Stick)
Audio - The native speaker is only 2 wats so obviously not nearly strong enough for any setting really, but what disapointed me was when trying to take audio out from the projector to an external speaker via 3.5m or A/V the power was significantly reduced as to what volume I could acheive. It tried to take audio out to a sound bar, and a few other external speakers to no avail. In order to get a strong audio here you must do one of the 2 options AFAIK: 1 - take the sound out to an amplified source like a guitar amp, or 2 - take the hdmi signal to a receiver or HDMI splitter with audio extractor first so that the audio never goes into the projector itself, only the external speaker. This way you bypass the audio limitations of the projector. I suspect most people looking for a permanent solution do this already, just know its not a simple audio out solution so you will need to invest in more things for a good experience.
TL;DR - Good projector for the price, very sharp and bright for projector range, be prepared to solve the audio problem with external hardware, as well as an occasional rainbow effect with the DLP
Only watching my first movie on it but it is gorgeous. Watching it on a naked wall and I can barely tell. It's super bright, even on eco and with the room about a quarter full of sunlight. I am beyond impressed right now.
Easy 5/5 stars for now but if anything goes wrong I'll edit my review later.

I am using this projector to set up a mini home theater in my office/study/guest-room. The projector is currently resting upside-down on a high shelf, projecting a 100" diagonal image to a rigid screen temporarily rigged from 1/8" white hardboard.
The projector controls are only slightly clunky, and have extensive options for tweaking the image and other settings. Quite easy to figure it all out. Pity the remote control isn't backlit, but it works very well, and is mostly only used for turning the projector on/off.
Picture quality is excellent! Under anything but the brightest conditions, it rivals a big LCD TV. Except it doesn't take up the same permanent space that a big TV would. So huge win there.
The fan noise is louder than expected. Everyone says "whisper quiet", but that's not really true. It's more like a Very Loud whisper, or a loud computer fan from 10 years ago, or a quite loud home forced-air heating system. The fan is variable speed, driven by temperature. The freer/cooler the airflow, the quieter the fan. Noise perception does vary depending on which side of the projector one is nearest: the side furthest from the projector lens is the loudest. All of that said, once a movie is playing with sound through my 5.1 speakers, the fan is quickly forgotten. But it is there.
The included power cord is short. No HDMI cable in the package, but instead they include a VGA cable {!?!?) for those who just HAVE to use modern tech with 20-year old computers. :) No USB or USB-power ports on the the projector, and no 12V accessory power either: so don't plan to use this to drive any other home theater automation. This projector also lacks automatic "power on signal" for HDMI connections, though it does have it for the VGA inputs.
The built-in single speaker is useless, and while there is a 3.5mm stereo audio output, there is no digital passthrough or SPDIF/TosLink output, so the sound has to be split away from the HDMI at the source or with an HDMI splitter. No problem for us here, as our PVR has optical out for sound.
The first attached photo shows it in a bright, partially sunlit room, with a sliver of direct sunlight on the screen.
I have tried this projector side-by-side with the similarly spec'd Optoma HD27: similar fan noise levels, similar brightness, but the Optoma remote control is horrible in every way, and that projector emits a constant high frequency whine that drove me to return it to the store after less than 10 minutes of use.
I also compared it to the incredibly cheap and feature-filled, but also very dim (200 ANSI lumens), ABOX A6, and the BenQ is obviously a LOT LOT LOT brighter, and about half the noise level of the ABOX A6.
4 stars (docked one for the noise and lack of USB). I paid CAD$580.

Very bright image, did not try it on daylight since it was installed in the basement, but am pretty sure that it would have been adequate. I returned because my OCD kicked in I guess and got pissed off at the uneven corner.
Waiting still to get my refund, looks like Amazon takes its time with the more expensive items, hopefully it will come at some point.

The -1 star is from some weird issues when I first got it. I had issues where it wouldn't turn off (weird gray screen) and a few other inconsistencies. Fortunately these disappeared after a single instance of each. Smooth sailing since.
