Most people have covered this already but I do like the combination of anodized aluminum and G-10 on liners...nothing like fiberglass/resin and metallic alloys to make a really durable knife. To add the solidity of this knife it does possess a lengthy notched zytel or fiberglass backspacer (which I'm a fan of),fills in the gaps of a bolt-on construction knife. Nothing else to mention other than it's very well machined. Feels comfortable to grip though, haven't had problems accessing the axis lock or deploying the blade...didn't experience any blade play either with rock solid lock up. I'm glad Benchmade put a safety on this knife-assisted opening knives without a safety can trigger if you bump into something hard enough or drop it on the floor.
M390 Tool Steel
What's in this super steel? let's take a look...
Now I've tried D2 and that's a pretty decent challenger in comparison to the M390 but it had one problem...D2 was barely rust resistant.D2 was like a carbon steel that didn't blacken if you got water or chemicals on it, you could just wipe it off and had enough chromium to shield against red rust from forming. But it wasn't a steel you wanted to go hiking or hunting with and you're in the middle of a downpour...the affordably priced stainless steels with a higher chromium level had that beat against D2 steel. Is the M390 a impressive steel? Hell yes and I'll clarify...
*Rust resistance and corrosion resistance on this steel is just so excellent it's almost overkill. When you think of tool steel you picture forgetting your socket wrench under your vehicle and the elements get a hold of it...not with this steel. You could definitely use this as your outdoors steel if desired, a chromium level of 20.00% is just unheard of.
*I've used some of the super steels and in my opinion they fluctuate drastically in how they perform. Take ATS-34 for example: to me it holds an edge no longer than 440C but in comparison it can hold a better edge and take longer to dull against other materials.CPM-S30V holds an awesome edge but I think it's on the brittle side and chips easily...everybody's opinion on super steel differs. Tool steels though? I'm sold on them for high performance. This M390 is very utilitarian at holding it's edge against anything really coarse and it's not going to remain sharp forever but it's going to seem that way against the more famed super steels. This steel does not belong on a shelf, it is expensive but there's a firm reason for it...it's truly high caliber user steel and an investment.
Drop Point Blade:
Better level of sharpness from my previous experience which reminded me of a Schrade USA knife, still not a Buck but the edge wasn't lacking in cutting power and the serrations were almost as sweet as a Spyderco...very well defined serrations. Can't comment on the blade that much because this drop-point reminds me of a chef's knife but it's sleek enough and combined with the serrations it's a pretty cozy cutting blade...I'm more in tune with this blade than a reverse tanto, this blade feels more practical.
Secured with three screws and stainless steel, has a good reach clipped on your pocket and holds up well. It is tip-up carry only but it is switchable between left and right hand carry.
I'm glad I gave Benchmade another chance and they really came through for me with the Barrage model. It's a shame that Benchmade seems to be the only one using M390 Steel because it's so worth shelling out the dollars if it's a knife you'll stick with for years to come especially for a really high quality knife.5-stars and highly recommended!
