It weighs about as much as I thought it would weigh and is easily every day carry-able, however it is slightly heavier than previous edc knives I've owned. The locking mechanism is ingenious and unique to Benchmade (as far as I know). Works like a dream; it is a simple, elegant solution to locking and unlocking the blade.
The knife comes with a standard pocket clip to where 3/4" of knife is sticking out of your pocket. I asked online (BM) how I could get a deep carry clip and they are sending me one for FREE. Benchmade is a quality company who takes care of their customers. I would recommend the company to anyone. Even if you don't buy this particular knife, you should buy a Benchmade knife. Well worth the cost in quality and customer satisfaction.
The pocket clip is on such that the blade points upward and opens into the side of your pants. This was strange to me at first, however it is better. This prevents the knife from ever opening in your pocket assuming you carry sensibly on the outside edge of your right pocket. Safety first! Pulling the knife is a different motion than I am used to, but also better - it is now in a preparatory state to flick open. Smart!
This knife is smaller than my previous, it was sharp out the box. It will take some time to greive over the lost one but this one will do.
FYI if you found a benchmade knife at homedepot in the parking lot that was mine......
I've never spent more than $40 for a knife. I lost my previous EDC, a CRKT knife variation.
After much reading and window shopping, I decided to order a SOG Aegis Tanto. But as soon as I removed it from it's cheap store display packaging, I knew it wasn't the knife for me. It was too light and felt cheap in my hand. I have returned it and now own the 551 Griptilian.
I was very impressed with the packaging and presentation of the knife. This knife fits and feels great in my hand. The weight and design are a perfect combination. The smooth, easy opening and closing mechanism is the best I've ever used. I'll be purchasing another for a gift soon.
I got: BM 551 Griptillian Black Handle / Satin finish / plain blade. //// Pretty much the most boring option I could think of. I am not a flashy kind of guy.
Benchmade is known for quality... right? Well, I can surely tell that this product was made with quality in mind. The blade is 154CM - good AMERICAN steel, perfectly shaped and razor sharp right out of the box. I haven't tried to sharpen it yet, and haven't put it up to really hard tasks, but just the way the steel feels, is very good.
The handle, well, it's very sturdy and has decent enough grip, but I just kinda get the feeling like it could be a little better. I understand that it's a plastic handle to reduce weight, but maybe just a little more oomph in the plastic would make me feel more secure with it.
Overall 9..5/10 5 stars. Great product, wouldn't expect any less from Benchmade.
I love it. I slash through the boxes that come from Amazon every day. I cut open Orange peels. I cut out bruises in apples. I slice through the cellophane bags of cashews..... And I gutted 3 mule deer in October with it. I can't remember the deer very well. But the cardboard every day is real.
I take knives apart and smooth out the corners I touch.
