Steel: 154cm - mg and vg-10 -sd4. These are both quality steels and are of equal qualities in performance
Lock mechanism: axis lock -mg and lockback -sd4. Both are very sturdy and can be one handed closing with some practice
Opening: Both have a thumb hole opening which allows for quick opening. The axis lock allows you to flick open the mg if you release the lock much easier than the sd4 can
Grind style: Hollow grind -mg full flat ground -sd4. Both are great for slicing. The mg has less of a point so it isnt as good for stabbing, but it is also much thicker leading up to the tip making it a much stronger tip.
Blade length: They both have the same length from handle to tip, the mg has a 1/4" longer edge length though.
Handle length: The mg has about 5/16th shorter handle than the sd4. The mg comfortably with little wiggle room, gives me a 4finger grip in my hands that fit into large size gloves. The sd4 has a longer handle which means it will provide a 4 finger grip for people with even larger hands. This difference is probably the most important for people with hands the fit glove size XL and up.
Handle width: The handle with on the mg is slightly wider than the sd4
Clip: They both have a strong clip. The sd4 has the advantage with a 4way positioning of the clip where the mg is only tip up.
Quality: Both are amazing and you cant go wrong with either one
On to the good:
I usually hate the color pink, but this contrasts so nicely with the black bolts and clip. Not only was I pleasantly surprised, but I love it. First pink anything I own. It also looks less wannabe-tactical or intimidating, which means ease of public use and carry. Very EDC-able.
The flipping mechanism is buttery smooth, with a fast but controlled feel. Pulling the Axis Lock swings the blade free completely, if you prefer flicking it open without the thumbhole. The thumbhole is great, by the way... It was actually why I picked the sheepsfoot version in the first place -- greater usable area when slicing, versus the thumb-stud that comes with the regular Mini-Griptilian.
The 154CM steel blade is EXCELLENT. This knife has become my main whittler because it's so robust at slicing through wood -- it can do both large cuts and detailed work with little friction and minimal hand fatigue or hot spots. It's more enjoyable for whittling than my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (s35v), Flexcut Carvin' Jack, Victorinox, and others. I've only lightly stropped it with leather so far (with no compound), and the edge has been razor sharp for several weeks. Even accidentally pierced my finger the other day with the slightest pressure; I was bleeding and it hurt, but couldn't stop thinking, "What a blade!!"
The shape of the handle suits my hand very well. It's almost comforting to hold. Yes, the plastic does have this cheapy look and clanky sound to it, but it's light and hard, and I've grown to love it. It's less grippy than the Spyderco FRN handles, if that's what you're used to. Nonetheless the contouring fills the hand in a way that allows for nice control in use. Jimping is strategically placed in areas around the perimeter. No issues with slippage so far.
Lastly, there are a lot of comparisons online between the Benchmade Mini Griptilian and the Spyderco Delica 4. My personal vote is for this knife, unless the extra $20-30 is a bottleneck.
Fantastic pocket knife. Would replace if lost. Would buy for others. No longer hate pink.
