The horns adds such a lovely dimension to MH's performances on this record that you'd think the players were telepathically linked.

I'm pretty much a fan of everything Mary Halvorson does but I think this is her strongest release, both in terms of strength of songs and playing. The songs, whether for the quintet or guitar/bass/drum trio, are interesting melodically and structurally while providing ample room for all the instrumentalists to strut their stuff. Everybody acquits themselves well on this but special recognition should be given to the leader. She has relatively quickly become such a strong player that whenever I hear her, either on her releases or somebody else's, I can automatically say "that's Mary Halvorson". She's very much a guitarist of the times, combining innate melodic talent with innovative use of phase shifting and delay devices to create a signature sound without being at all annoyingly repetitive.

This would be a perfect record for somebody who hears Nels Cline with Wilco and is interested in looking at similar music to what Cline does as far as being more adventurous than what is in that setting. There is plenty going on here in every song such that multiple listens will be richly rewarded. She has already accomplished more than a lot of musicians do in a lifetime and I think her future is very bright.
