While Sienna and Georgie appear to have the perfect lives, all is not rosy for them either. Despite having the 'perfect family,' Georgie is restless and unfulfilled, marrying too young and hastily regretting it. Motherhood and marriage is not all that she expected it to be. She is frustrated with her life and seeks excitement and passion and is too easily tempted by a work colleague. The added pressure of her husband wanting a second child when Georgie can hardly cope with the child they have, all push Georgie to her limits.
Sienna appears to have the ideal high flying life, travelling all around the world with her job and a sexy boyfriend on tap, her perfect set up is about to come crumbling down around her ears with her boyfriend wanting more commitment than Sienna is prepared to give. She is a thoroughly modern woman who is career driven and is fiercely wanting to hold onto her independence. But, at what cost? She must try to strike a balance between holding onto her boyfriend and not losing her own identity in his desire to settle down. A struggle many women face.
Kate Frost has written such a good and emotive story showing how each of these women appears to want what the others have. No one is happy in their lives and things have not worked out how each woman had envisaged. It's almost as though each of the women has been born into the wrong life and this is cruel and ironic. But, real life is like that and that's why I loved this book so much. The book moves along and a good pace and the writing is superb. Each of the characters is interesting, complex and although at times the reader may not agree with their actions, we become very emotionally invested in the outcomes for each. A great book and right up there on my highly recommended list!
It's a story of different women, some friends, some family, who're either going through fertility treatment, or are otherwise pregnant naturally, and all of the ups and downs they face. I thought the author got to the heart of what it's like for women undergoing fertility treatment. She described very well the pain, both physical and emotional, that these women receiving IVF treatment are going through. I felt able to empathise with the characters and almost feel the emotions of what they were experiencing.
The plot kept me guessing, particularly as to who would have a baby and whose treatment would be successful. The characters of the four women - Pippa, Georgie, Sienna and Connie - felt real to me and fully formed - all of them with their good and bad sides. I also thought the way they changed as people during the course of the story was realistic and well judged.
As someone who lives in Bristol (UK), I appreciated the beautiful depictions in the novel of various locations in Bristol, as well as Bath. I could visualise them which was really nice - I don't often get to do that when reading a novel. I thought that the descriptive passages were especially good, and the way that the author uses the theme of the apple blossom, and how she weaves it into the narrative of the story, linking it to the theme of the book and of course the title, was a nice touch and beautifully done.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a strong story, with a great plot, interesting, three dimensional characters and plenty of twists and turns.
I loved the hope that was present in this book, even as each woman's life wasn't turning out the way they expected it to. I also loved the lessons and examples of friendship. I think any woman can really relate to what the characters are experiencing and that feeling of being "stuck." It was an engaging story, despite the serious topics covered. I would highly recommend this books to those who love women's fiction.
