Shadyia is brave, loyal, and just the right fraction larger than life-- with a reason for it, of course. More than that, this is a book that offers quick thrills but takes its time to build to something larger. Just what the old gods are scheming... or why there's a cursed tower in the center of town... or who leads the Silver Rose... all of those move in the background and work their way onto the stage in time.
"A mage, a warrior, and a thief walk into a dungeon..."
This story is very entertaining. The plot twists and twines, and relationships and events from the front of the story weave their way through to the end, keeping the beginning always in the reader's mind. Some plot elements were left unresolved (the burning of Anderholm, for instance) but that's in anticipation of things to come, as this is listed as a 'first book' in a presumed trilogy.
My only quibble is there's no real character development. The characters are drawn very well, their interactions are entertaining and really do make the story work on various levels, and they maintain character (for want of a better word) through to the end, but there's no growth that I could see. None of the characters change, for better or for worse (save for those that die, which I guess would be a change for the worse). I would have like to see how the characters change as a result of the trials they face, whether they have goals and reach them in this installment of the series. Perhaps this element of storytelling will be included in the books to follow.
If you are looking for an entertaining read with action, character relationships that surprise, and a plot that takes some unexpected turns, I am confident this story will satisfy your needs, and draw you back for more. I do plan to read on- just finding the time is the problem for me.
