That is what is happening with the sexy Dane Kauffmann. Dane seems to have it all. His own business, money, love. Dane has emptiness though. Something is missing and he didn’t know what exactly that was until he meets Eden Clare at a bar. He was hanging out after work because he wasn’t ready to go home. Eden was receiving unwanted attention from a guy at the bar and Dane stepped in to get the creeper away. Eden woke something up in him and as much as he tried to push it away, fate kept bringing them back together. Eden has an uplifting personality and that personality brings Dane back to life. Eden moved miles away from home, in the hopes of getting a job at Kauffmann Investments. Eden says it is her dream job but there is something more personal driving her to want to work there.
Dane loves Gabi, his Fiancé but realizes it isn’t the love they use to share it is love holding on by obligation. When Dane finds out that his obligation to Gabi was due to a lie she created he realizes that he has given up way too much time not allowing himself to be happy. He decides to follow his heart.
Leddy Harper has created an amazing storyline, sharing real emotion and causing a stir of feelings. Her characters are amazing and fit together wonderfully. Leddy carefully creates her story and each word draws you in. As I read Benevolent I felt like this story was something happening in front of me.
I have enjoyed all of Leddy’s books and can’t wait to read what other characters take over her head.
There was enough of a set up that I thought it could be interesting but after the first 30 pages, I just couldn't get into it. The guy, Dane, was supposed to be the ultimate nice guy but he just came off as a wuss to me. His actions were the most annoying part of the book. Neither of the two women in this triangle (Eden and Gabi) were even half as confused about their feelings as he was. He made the same mistakes over and over.
There was also a lot of psychobabble (which he kept saying was women being confusing) but I thought it was confusing too. Nobody talks like this--in riddles where the other person has to find the deep, hidden meaning in your words. It's ridiculous. You say what you actually mean or don't talk, otherwise it's just a rude tease.
The other problem I had with Dane was the way he kept throwing around the word "whore". From the very beginning, he voiced his opinions about how, except for Eden, women who wore a certain kind of outfit, or red lipstick, or if they had sex with his friend, all of them were "whores." It was really off-putting and offensive. I am not into guys who throw that word around so easily. And the slut-shaming was a serious turn off.
So, the book was kind of predictable and there's a TON of drama but I just didn't find any of it all that compelling, story-wise.
I rushed through to get to the end, less because I wanted to see what happened, than I just wanted to be done with it.
Not a keeper.
I read this and to be honest was disappointed. I just was a bit turned off to a few things at the start and just couldn't move past those feelings as I read more. Sorry, this didn't do it for me but I will definitely give this author another try in the future!
