I'm a little obsessed with Benji. I already owned every Benji film and the TV series on DVD so I didn't really need to purchase the Blu-ray Benji collection, but decided to purchase to have the Blu-ray and digital versions as another option for watching the films. I did have some trouble with the digital code. It wasn't expired or used so I don't know why it wouldn't work, but I contacted the company and they solved the issue for me. The only thing I wasn't really happy about was that I had just merged all my movies into the movies anywhere app so they would all be quick and easy to locate rather than having apps with different movies everywhere, and after getting the digital code I found that the movie app the code is for is not part of movies anywhere so I still have to remember this one is located in a different app than the rest of my movies.

The DVD works fine, but when trying to redeem the digital copy the company is saying it is expired and you can no longer watch Benji on their digital web site. False advertising because we really wanted the digital copy to be able to let the kids watch on long road trips.

I got the three disk set, because I thought that it would have the same features that the single disks had and I was disappointed with the lack of features. Now I have to go get the second movie all over again because the collection doesn't have Benji going to Marineland...

As for the movies themselves... They are classics and should be watched by kids as well as adults!

1974年、茶色いもじゃもじゃの毛に覆われた小さな雑種犬ベンジーを主人公にした低予算の小品が、世界中で思わぬヒットを飛ばした。それまで映画を作ったことのなかったジョー・キャンプが、「ディズニーのアニメ作品『わんわん物語』を実写化したらどうなるだろうか？」というアイデアを膨らませて、それを実現した愛らしい作品だ。もちろん、ドッグ・トレーナーの手腕や編集の巧みさに助けられている部分が大きいのだろうが、ベンジーのやさしい心が作品全体から感じられる(チャーリー・リッチによるテーマ曲”I Feel Love”も、まさにベンジーの世界観を表していて素敵だ)、素朴で温かい世界が、殺伐とした現実を忘れさせ、多くの人の心を捉えたのには大いに納得が行く。

映画史に名を残した先輩犬であるリン・ティン・ティンやラッシーなどのような由緒正しい(？)出自のいわゆる「名犬」ではなく、自由気ままに生きている野良犬だということが(犬の世界のチャップリンのようだ)、ベンジーの親しみやすさにつながっているのだろう。

その後、映画界の動物スターとなったベンジーを主人公にした(もちろん、演じる犬は都度代わっているが)作品が、現在に至るまで数々作られていることは周知の通り。ただし、有名スターと組んだり(『名探偵ベンジー』)、ディズニー配給になったりと(『がんばれ！がんばれ！ベンジー』)、その人気とともにメジャー会社の関与が強くなり、当初のキャンプの手作り的作品が持っていた素朴な感触と魅力が次第に失われて行ったのは評価のわかれるところかもしれない。

本Blu-ray(DVDとデジタル・ダウンロードも同梱)は、オリジナルの第1作目とその続編に加え、2004年製作の『らぶいぬベンジーはじめての冒険』の3本を1枚のディスクに収めたもの。

●邦題『ベンジー』

小さな町にある空き家を根城にして、自由気ままに暮らす野良犬ベンジー。空腹になれば、いつものルートを回り、食べ物をくれるやさしい人間たちのもとを訪れている。特に、ベンジーがお気に入りなのは、父親に内緒で食べ物をくれ、一緒に遊んでくれるチャップマン家の幼い兄妹のポール(アレン・フィウザット)とシンディ(シンシア・スミス)。そんなある日、ポールとシンディが何者かに誘拐され、ベンジーの空き家に監禁される。何とか二人を救い出そうとするベンジーだったが…。

野良犬ベンジーを主人公にした記念すべき第1作目。ベンジーを演じるのは、TVシリーズ『ペチコート作戦』にも出演していたヒギンス。日本劇場公開は、1976年7月10日。

チャップマン家の家政婦メアリー(パッツィ・ギャレット)、ポール(アレン・フィウザット)、シンディ(シンシア・スミス)は、ギリシャ旅行へ行くことになり、ベンジーとティファニーを連れて空港へとやって来る。荷物ゲートへと預けられたベンジーは、怪しい男に薬品を嗅がされ、意識を失ってしまう。やがて、ベンジーは、ギリシャの紛失物預かり所で目を覚ますのだが…。

前作のヒットを受けて、ギリシャ・ロケを敢行して製作された続編。本作でベンジーを演じているのベンジーン。日本劇場公開は、1977年7月16日。

●邦題『ラブいぬベンジーはじめての冒険』

劣悪な環境で犬のブリーダー業をしている父親を持つコルビー(ニック・ウィテカー)は、販売価値がないとして捨てることを命じられた子犬のベンジーを父親に内緒で育て始める。それを知って激怒した父親は、ベンジーの母犬を檻に閉じ込めてしまう。やがて成犬となったベンジーは、病気にかかって衰弱している母犬を何とか救おうとするのだが…。

劇場版ベンジー作品としては、1987年の『がんばれ！がんばれ！ベンジー』から17年ぶりに作られた作品。日本劇場公開は、2006年11月11日。

本Blu-rayは、2018年に、米Mill Creek Entertainmentが、それぞれ単品Blu-rayとして発売したものを1枚のディスクに収めた再発盤。1作目、2作目のマスターには、オリジナルの35mm素材(キャメラ・ネガかマスター・ポジかは不明)から作られたHDマスターを使用している。

若干、パラやキズなどが残っている箇所もあるが、色調も落ちついた感じで、ディテール表現も悪くない。製作年を考えれば、十分な画質だろう。2.0ch リニアPCMの音声も、平板な感じではあるが、明瞭だ。

『ラブいぬベンジーはじめての冒険』は、比較的、初期のデジタル撮影作品なので、色調が少しばかり平板で、微妙な色彩のニュアンスに欠けているような気がするが、ディテール表現は悪くなく、こちらも十分な画質。5.1ch DTS-HD マスター・オーディオの音声も、明瞭だ。

全作品、英語字幕も収録。

3作品を1枚のディスクに収めているが、圧縮の大きな瑕疵などもなく、価格もリーズナブルな点で、本シリーズのファンには、嬉しい一枚だ。
