Product Description

Made in France from a single piece of the finest olive wood, this handcrafted ladle offers original beauty (no two are identical) and exceptional convenience in the kitchen. The ladle provides a long handle that keeps hands a safe distance from the heat and a deep, rounded head that works well for serving soups, sauces, gravies, and more. The use of wood not only brings the beauty of nature indoors, but it has also been found to be more hygienic than plastic. Furthermore, out of respect for the environment, the particular olive wood used by Berard comes from sustainably managed forests, so the ladle can be enjoyed for years to come and with peace of mind. The versatile piece features a lovely satin finish, made up of a combination of mineral oil and beeswax, which protects the wood and offers added strength and resilience. Safe to use with all cookware, the ladle measures approximately 14 by 5 by 6 inches and should be hand washed only and dried thoroughly.

From the Manufacturer

Berard is located in the mountains of Royans, which border the northern edge of Provence in France.
Since 1892, Berard has specialized in creating kitchen products from carefully selected woods such as beechwood, boxwood and olivewood. The quality of Berard products are the result of a century of know-how. The Berard objective is to offer the best in kitchen and decorative wood products both in traditional as well as innovative shapes and materials.

Because Berard has been making wood items for over a century, our artisans truly understand the various woods and how to best create wonderful and useful articles from this warm and beautiful material. Our products may have irregular graining, veining or knots. Each piece is hand crafted based on the characteristics of the wood it is to be made from. Whether using these articles for cooking, serving or decorating, these unique items not only highlight your good taste but also your enjoyment of natural things.

Features:

  • Handcrafted in France, using traditional methods
  • Each piece is artisanaly produced by artisans who are adept at working with wood. The unique nature of the wood means that no two pieces are alike and dimensions will vary from piece to piece. The little imperfections in the wood are characteristic of the hand crafted nature of each piece.
  • The quality of Berard products are the result of century of know-how. Year after year, Berard has been synonymous with quality, authenticity and reliability.
  • All of our olivewood items come from agricultural orchards and each tree is cut with respect to the laws that protect each country and the use of olive wood.

  • Environment's Respect:
Wood is a natural resource which is crucial to the balance of life on our planet. Using it as a raw material means respecting it from its origins...the forest or orchard...all the way through to recycling.

On these issues, Berard's position is one of clarity and integrity: only species from forests and orchards which are managed in a sustainable manner are used. Respect of origin, strict management of quantities and careful selection of species are long-standing values at Berard.

The ladle is as beautiful as everyone says it is. However, when I received it and looked at the tag, it said, "Made in Tunisia." For $48, I expect it to be made in France, particularly when the product information is laden with how wonderful Berard of Royans, bordering Provence, is. (Also, it had a bit of a natural crack on which they'd used filler.)

I have nothing against Tunisia. I would love to visit, I had a colleague from there who was top notch and a lovely lady. But, I don't want to pay $48 for an olive wood ladle sold erroneously as French, with Berard laughing all the way to the bank as they pay Tunisian craftsmen $5/ladle. I returned mine and bought a Tunisian olive wood ladle elsewhere on the internet for $20.

Amazon would do well to give an honest report of this product and correct all the "French," "Made in France," "Handcrafted in France, using traditional methods" language.

Never thought a ladle could be an art piece as well as functional. I love using this in my Le Creuset soup pot, no worries about damaging the pot & you get a perfect cup of soup w 1 scoop , or hearty bowl w/2 scoops. Easy to clean, comfortable to use, beautiful to look at & best of all not made in China.

What I received IS NOT Berard. "Made in Isreal" is stamped on the bottom, its a dull lightweight wood with a rather large chunk of wood GLUED at the rim of the bowl. However, they are using the Berard photo!! Its being returned immediately and a replacement on its way (thank you Amazon). I'll be happy to update this review when an actual "Berard" is received.

***I promised an update: After three replacements, finally a true Berard arrived. Eh... it was okay. Not perfect, a strange anomaly in the wood which is not the fault of Amazon by any means, and spots where the varnish was shoddy or dripping. I kept it for the sake of food photography, but really am not thrilled with the piece as they represented it. Sorry, I really wished there was a better outcome.

My mom wanted this for Christmas, and when I purchased I was laughing a little because of the price. But once I saw it I understood. This thing is beautiful and very well made. It is a great buy if you don't mind spending the 50+ for a ladle/dipper. Really the picture does not do it justice it is a really very pretty piece and very durable.

This IS NOT a Berard ladle - the one that you saw in the kitchen store. This is an IMITATION Berard ladle!! This is a product of Holy Land Market, despite what the description and pictures say. Again, IF YOU BUY THIS YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A BERARD LADLE. YOU WILL RECEIVE A BERARD KNOCK-OFF.

I was hesitant to spend this much on a ladle, but my husband told me to go for it and so I did. We needed something we could use to ladle boiling water out of our 9 qt. Le Creuset pot (see my review for this pan) that wouldn't scrape the pot or leave marks. This ladle is nice and smooth, is weighted nicely, and does exactly what we needed it to do. It is even nicer than we expected. Full, it holds between 1/2 and 3/4 C. It seems to be made to last a long time. We have been ladling boiling water out of it several times a day since it arrived on 8/16/13 and it still looks as good as it did the day it arrived. It is easier to use and has a much more balanced feel to it than the stainless steel ones we have. It has a classy look to it, if a ladle can be considered classy. It also has a hanging loop attached to the hole at the top, that makes it convenient for using. I always have it ready when I need it, looped over the drawer handle next to the stove. I recommend this lovely ladle to anyone looking for a wood ladle that will last, do a good job of serving soup or whatever else you have in mind, and will look good doing it!

I've never purchased a Berard olive wood utensil before, but this ladle is so outstanding I'm looking at what else they offer. The wood grain is simply beautiful and the wood itself is polished and smooth. Other olive wood utensils I've purchased recently still allow food to stick to the surface despite several treatments with a high quality wood block oil (am trying block cream next). Given the surface on this Berard utensil, I do not believe I'll have the same problem.

I've never seen a wood utensil this beautiful. I can't wait to make soup to try it!

Beautiful! Just like all of my olive wood pieces from Berard - none of which were made in France!! Yep - this ladle was made in Tunisia and just what does that mean?? Hats off to the artisans in Tunisia! As they really know how to craft a good ladle!! Please - all of you negative reviewers (especially you one star types...) JUST SEND YOURS BACK! Believe me - there are plenty of happy homes ready to take your Tunisian made Berards off of your hands! For anyone looking for an honest review I will say this: if you are willing to pay the asking price and if you receive one of these and it is of the same caliber as the one I received, you will NOT be disappointed. Period.
