About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were already successful cartoonists for magazines and adult humor books when they began writing children's books. The first story starring the bear family, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962. Since then, more than 360 Berenstain Bears books have been published, and more than 300 million copies have been sold. What began as an idea sparked by their young sons' love of reading has become one of the best-selling children's book series ever.

From the Inside Flap

Sister Bear watches Dr. Bearson fill Brother Bear's small cavity. Then it's her turn in the chair to have a dangling baby tooth removed. An entertaining story for preschoolers of a cheerful and informative visit to a dentist.

I ordered this book to help my 3-year-old daughter get excited about her first trip to the dentist, but I was disappointed when it arrived and I read it all the way through. This book involved Sister Bear being afraid of the dentist, and the dentist eventually pulling out a loose tooth for her. My daughter doesn't really have a good concept of loose teeth yet (who needs a dentist for a child's loose tooth, anyway?), and I didn't want to scare her into thinking the dentist was going to pull out her teeth. I ended up ordering a different book that focused on all the neat things the dentist would do, and never read this one to my daughter at all.

I kept Focusing on the Nails of the Bears, didn't know if it would scare my son. Also didn't want the focus to be so much on the tools. But if you grew up with the Berenstain Bears then you might look past it all.

I read Berenstain Bears books as a child, loved them, and still do. I bought this book to prepare my 3-yr-old for his first teeth cleaning and am surprised by how well it stands the test of time. It explains enough to make a child feel comfortable going, but it isn't too specific on dental equipment & practices to be outdated like Mercer Mayer's version. My son loved all the stickers it came with, and now he's excited about being a big boy and going to the dentist. Can't beat it for the price!

This is the same book I loved growing up but the pages are terribly thin. I would prefer to have thicker pages, and no stickers, so that the book will hold up to the love a 2 year old will show it. I purchased this for my son to try to get him used to the idea of a dentist before we went for the first time...I changed the words when Brother mentioned tooth yanking...no need to make a poor child terrified about tooth pulling. ;)

I bought this book for my 3 year old son, intending to use it to help prepare him for his first visit to the dentist. It really wasn't a visit to the dentist book. Sister Bear has a loose tooth and nervously tags along with Brother bear to his dentist visit (his visit isn't discussed at all). While the book does identify dental tools, which I suppose is good; I wasn't impressed with the manner. It was more Sister Bear looked at the dental tool tray (while brother bear was getting checked I guess) and saw a 'water spraying thing...a scraping thing...etc'. Actually names and their uses aren't explained.

Ultimately the dentist pulls out Sister Bear's loose tooth, which I thought was unnecessary. And there isn't any follow up, such as rinsing your mouth out afterwards, or a discussion on the importance of baby teeth, etc.

Anyway, it was a rather long story too, especially since my son's not a huge Berenstain Bears fan and it really didn't go in the direction I was hoping, i.e. a step by step visit to the dentist, waiting room, meeting the dentist, sit in the chair (moves up and down), open wide, counting teeth, the importance of brushing, this is tool X and it does Y, etc.

The book received good reviews from others, so perhaps it just wasn't what I was looking for.

I bought this for my daughter to lesson her fears of going to the dentist. I read rhis to her each night for a few nights before her appointment. This little book definitely helpes qualm her fears and understand what would happen tlat the dentis. I would reccommend this book.

My daughter has recently discovered Berenstein Bears. She loves the stories and I love reading them to her as it transports me back to my childhood. The newer stories aren't nearly as good as the 80's classics.
