Fischer-Dieskau's commanding performance stays intact in my memory: his desperate attempt as he is dying at Lulu's hands to save his son from
her allure is a terrifying stare into the Abyss I can never forget or assauge. Boulez-s recording with the restored last act preserves forever Teresa
Stratas's incandescent performance. I presently have two dvd versions, both of which are very satisfying. However, this Metropolitan production must be added to any others you may possess. William Chittrick's stage is a thing of wonder, evoking both the Berg era in Europe and our own era, both decadent, both in need of redemption..Both principal singers sing with mastery and beauty and ease. Yes, ease. The twelve tone complexities have been thoroughly internalized by these singers, they sing not an avant garde score but rather music expressive of their interior lives, music which plumps the depths and scales the heights. When Lulu sings OH, FREEDOM! after her escape from prison you realize what an absolute value freedom is for these people, to which they are willing to sacrifice everything - EVERYTHING - even their lives. For many still this is a tawdry tale of sexual obsession. No, it is a tragic drama of people pursuing freedom to the nth degree, and confronting their loss of self in that mad pursuit. They are pulled into the Abyss, their tragic destiny fulfilled in utter destruction.
